A lot of Trekkies would say the JJ version is too great a departure from the original series. After all, JJ himself said he didn't even like Star Trek. He claimed it was too 'sciency' and he couldn't follow it. He's more a Star Wars fan, and said that he tried to make his own Star Trek movie more like Star Wars, which to most Trekkies is a big no-no. Personally I'm a fan of hard sci-fi, which you can only really get in books, not movies or TV. There is already too little science in popular sci-fi, so there's no reason to remove even more.

DS9 was probably my favorite series, however. Quark and Garak being good characters, and Jadzia one of my favorite space babes. It was rather disappointing that she married Worf, however. Even more so when she quit the series to be in that stupid Becker show.

Husband and I are both hard-core scifi book addicts. Though I still tend toward the funny.

I didn’t like what JJ did to Star Wars. I LOVED what he did to Star Trek. Agree on Quark, Garak and Jadzea, though I’m beginning to warm to Odo. Loved Garak trying to destroy the founders planet; loved Julian shooting Garak. Just can’t stand Kira or Sisko or Miles. Husband just went bonkers watching Farscape when they carefully made the distinction between hypothesis and theory.

Garak and Quark were the best!

“Let me tell you something about humans, nephew: They’re a wonderful, friendly people - as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working.”
“But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those friendly, intelligent, wonderful people...will become as nasty and as violent as the most blood-thirsty Klingon.”  Quark from: The Siege of AR-558

Bashir: “What I want to know is that out of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which one’s weren’t?”

Garak: “My dear Doctor they’re all true.”

Bashir: “Even the lies?”

Garak: “Especially the lies.”
