FOLEY, AL (WALA) - Theres been a lot of excitement surrounding the opening of OWA in Foley over the weekend. The Park at OWA not only has rides that will leave visitors breathless, but has restrictions that have taken many park-goers by surprise. They include height and weight restrictions for adults.
Years in the making, OWA opened Friday, July 21, 2017 to much fanfare and large crowds enjoyed a variety of amusement rides, including the highly acclaimed Rolling Thunder roller coaster. Some visitors may have been disappointed after waiting in line just to find out they didnt make the cut.
The Park not only has restrictions on children, but some adults could also be left to watch from the sideline. On its website, OWA says guests of certain body proportions may not be able to be accommodated on some of the parks rides. It says, in part
This may apply, but is not limited to, guests who exceed 62 or those who exceed 225 pounds, have a 40 waist line or 52 chest, or females who exceed 200 pounds or wear a size 18 or larger.
OWA says the restrictions are for safety reasons. Certain lap bars and shoulder restraints may not function properly on larger adults. Folks were surprised to hear about restrictions on adult riders, but some said they saw the need for the restrictions.
My first thought was, well, it must be a safety issue and in this lawsuit prone society, if it will avoid useless, frivolous lawsuits and protect the safety of the rider then I cant argue with it, Linda Patterson said.
Others either said they didnt agree with the restrictions or think OWA should do a better job of warning people before they spend their money on a ticket.
I think its bogus man because Ive got friends that are over six, two. Im Five, eight. I mean, its bogus to me, Tyson Eaton said. If you want money, youve got to bring it down here. Lets do this the right way.
I think everybody should have the opportunity to know ahead of time before you go and spend money and go in that you will or will not be able to ride the rides. I mean, you should know that up front, said Susie Adams from Arkansas.
Late Monday afternoon, July 24, 2017 OWA issued a statement on the restrictions. It reads in part
guests must be able to utilize all safety restraints and devices as designed by the manufacturer. Guests must have the ability to maintain the proper upright position and riding posture during the entire ride operation.
The statement goes on to reiterate that safety is the number one concern for all guests at the park.
If Walmart had rules like these, they’d be out of business.
Hell, if the airlines can stuff a 350 pounder into a seat designed for 175 lbs, then why can’t an amusement park?
In other words, they will be out of business soon due to lack of customers.
What does OWA stand for?
If Dollywood had rules like these, theyd be out of business.
Lawyers and insurance made the rule
If your waist is 36” and your chest is 56”, you’re not fat...
Hell, if the airlines can stuff a 350 pounder into a seat designed for 175 lbs, then why cant an amusement park?
I think those days are coming to an end as well.

Yes. I approach a few of those limits (not the height one) and I am really not that obese. I see people larger than I many times a day — in fact I would go as far as to say I am around the median.
Did they design this in (and for) Japan or Korea our southern Mexico?
Height restrictions? Wow
Well, it does remove about half of the US adul population. But maybe they factored that into their business plan. It might be a branding issue as well.
They can't. And every time they try, they just prove you can't stuff 6 lbs of stuff in a 5 lb sack ...
What the F is an “OWA?”
Ah, look at all the fatso people
Ah, look at all the fatso people
Eleanor Rigby eats up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the blubber that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the fatso people
Where do they all come from?
All the fatty people
Where do they all belong?
What the F is an OWA?
