We have had temps in the 90s every day for quite a string here. I am guessing TX to OH has had pretty hot weather, as well. Seems like the trunk would not smell very nice after a few hours. Great detective work!

Several things come to mind:
She said ‘Over my dead body...’ and he obliged.
or
She hid in the trunk to check out his new digs [girlfriend] in Ohio and succumbed to exhaust fumes or heat exhaustion.
or
She hid in the trunk to save money on bus or plane fare.

Curious that the cause of death was still being determined. That would seem to indicate no apparent wounds (bullet or knife, for example).
The way the story is written, the child was hers, but not his. It seems strange that he would take her child on the long trip to meet the new ‘love connection’. It seems even stranger that he would put the body of his future X in the trunk to haul her to Ohio — unless he intended to dump the body somewhere along the way.
