This is a well researched NEJM article, but it describes at patient who would not be able to resume a public career in any fashion.
the problem incurred with the CAR T Cells regimen is not that they are ineffective, it is producing them in affordable numbers and having a receptor on off switch to end the therapy.
Important thing to note here is that the genetically modified immune cells (CAR-T cells) completely eradicated the patient’s original cancer and the patient was cancer free for 7.5 months ! This is unheard of for such a cancer. Unfortunately the cancer then mutated (dropped the original target (protein) that the CAR-T cells were targeting) making them invisible to the CAR-T cells. Whether McCain will benefit from this, we don’t know, but at least there is now proof that CAR-T cells can do what chemo and radiation cannot for a cancer like this. In the future they will likely aim car cells at multiple targets.
