Appalachian Power to rely half on coal, half on renewable energy

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The goal of Appalachian Power Company is to rely 50 percent on coal and 50 percent on renewable energy, according to the company’s president.

“The intent is to get coal down to about 50 percent, stay there and then bring the other resources up,” Chris Beam said on last week’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

As the company starts to work with new employers, the demand for new energy sources increases.

“A lot of the things that we’re hearing from them is they have their own mandated requirements that they have to meet from their board of directors like you have to be so green or so much CO2 less per year and they look at us and say ‘can you offer that?'” Beam said. “If the answer is no, then the development goes away from the state of West Virginia.”

Appalachian Power previously announced its desire to acquire two wind facilities: one at the Hardin wind facility in Ohio and the other at the Beech Ridge II wind facility in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Beam said they want to further diversify their energy portfolio to attract more business to the Mountain State.

“What we’re trying to do is trying to be able to make sure we can offer those things to stay on the same playing field as others, so we can bring economic development to the state,” he said.

Other energy sources would include natural gas, Beam said, and that it won’t come at any additional cost.

“The rates will not rise with the wind filing. They’re rate neutral,” he said. “There’s been a lot of pressure on our rates in the state and what we’re trying to do is diversify, but trying also not to also raise the rates, so these are kind of win-wins for everybody if we can do this.”

If Appalachian Power is approved for the two wind projects, the company will have more than 1,000 megawatts of wind and hydro generation, enough to power more than 230,000 homes.

Has the green agenda permeated the board rooms of Corporate America?

Is App Power hedging their bets that the War on Coal will resume once the Trump administration is out of office?

Does the announcement by App Power simply represent good corporate governance by providing diversity of sources to produce their product which is energy?

If some corporate moron came to me with this I would tell him

We can supply you with whatever power you want as long as you’re willing to pay for what it cost.

Then explain the realities of “Green Power”.

If you are willing to sign long term iron clad contracts for very expensive Green Power we would be glad to sell it to you. If not we are not going to put our company at risk so your company can look good in the press.

Yes. The indoctrinated are reaching the age where they are starting to control some things.

Is App Power hedging their bets that the War on Coal will resume once the Trump administration is out of office?

Depends on who comes into office at that time.

Does the announcement by App Power simply represent good corporate governance by providing diversity of sources to produce their product which is energy?

The customer is always right - even when the customer is stupid. In this case the demand is driven by their leftist indoctrination and political correctness. This customer not only wants the Model T, but they want it in pink. Does Henry Ford start painting his cars different colors, or does he forego a sale?

If you are building your future on the “demand for renewable energy” you better be careful. That demand exists only because of government mandates, not economic sense.

When those mandates get changed, or eliminated in favor of new mandates, you’re scrued and so are your shareholders.

Low cost energy is always in demand.

No bankruptcy. Appalachian Power is a subsidiary of American Electric Power.

50% renewable is a loser imo.

WHY would a coal country coal utility decide to not use coal after President Trump opened coal back up ?

Makes no sense to me.

Solar power is almost non existent in WV but there are sizeable hydro and wind power assets.

The article said wind and hydro. There was no mention of solar. WV isn't ideal for solar like the SW US.

WV has a lot of mountain ridges. All they need to do is cut down all the trees and line the ridges with wind turbines. This will not be in the Hyannisport viewshed and coastal liberals rarely visit, so the environmental degradation is ok.

I think the smart corporate play is to always describe the 50% or whatever as aspirational, to be achieved through incremental progress sometime in the future, never to be theachieved, like the expiration of Disney copyrights from the ‘20’s.

The coal will have to pull its own weight AND the dead weight of “renewable” energy.

Stupid beyond belief.

Mountains and rivers = the possibility of water power in the form of dams.

Another CEO who believes the fraud of Global Warming and making his rate payers pay for it. He needs to be fired.

Exactly. And buying existing wind farms at a fraction of what it costs to build them could make sense as well. Did the taxpayers get ripped off? Yeah, but that happened when the suckers were built.

The only renewable energy that doesn’t require government support to be profitable is burning wood.
