In WWII, this is the 'Shield and New Testament' that soldiers wore in their shirt pocket over their heart. The 'Shield' metal cover was to serve as protection from bullets. Quick access of the New Testament served as protection for their souls. He was Methodist, but The Church of God had a baseball team!

I have my late Dad’s Shield and New Testament sitting next to me on my desk as I type this. Its cover is a bit different, inscribed “May the the Lord be With You”.
