I remember one time when I was a kid, and something happened to make me cry. My cat Duke put his paw on my cheek just like that.
Don’t tell me that the animals don’t ‘know’ and understand emotional things that are going on with their humans!
Same thing. I remember smashing my finger at my friends house and laying on the couch crying (I was twelve) and their boxer came up to me and laid her head on my lap and just stayed there, sat on the floor with her head on my lap, was better than a Tylenol (which was given).
Notice the wrinkled forehead on the dog? Now that’s real concern.

When I’m sad, my cat, Mel, will sit on my lap facing me and stroke my left cheek very lightly with his paw.
If I cry, our male cat will sit on my lap and “pet” my cheek for a while.
