A Major after 30 years? I believe that’s the equivalent of the American O-4.
The limeys have a strange promotion system. The guy was the equivalent of a Company Commander in a Regiment. You are promoted within the Regiment but you can be detached and be promoted outside the Regiment and still be a member of the Regiment in your promoted Rank.
