Last week people were reckoning that the new raunchy comedy Rough Night would revolutionize Hollywood.
After all the movie, which stars Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell and Zoe Kravitz, is the first R-rated comedy in almost 20 years to be directed by a woman (Lucia Aniello, best known for directing Broad City). So its success counted for a good deal.
But that was then. Rough Night has wound up commercially comatose, taking just $8.1 million from over 3,000 movie theaters over the weekend at the U.S. box office. The movie, about a bachelorette party in Miami that spirals out of control when one of their party accidentally kills a male stripper, limped into eighth place in the US top 10 and was even beaten by the Mandy Moore shark movie 47 Meters Down.
Now that it has flopped, Rough Nights lasting legacy will be as a cautionary tale. But the inquest into why it has bombed is only just beginning.

Imo, it was too pro stupid.
The arrested development shtick is getting tired.
“That’s two flops in a row for Johansson, proving she isn’t much of a draw outside of Marvel.”
Never was.
This movie, though, seems to have been poorly marketed.
The world’s a mess. What will get people to the movies are films that are uplifting....dogs finding their way back home, funny misadventures on a family vacation, a good ol’ fashioned sports-themed movie, a nice historical fiction or detective adventure that isn’t a murder-a-minute.....
The best review of this was simple.
Attn: Hollywood
Ghostbusters (2016), Strike One.
Rough Night (2017), Strike Two...
It’s funny when even the Leftards don’t support their own....
She’s cute but she’s no “leading lady” and can’t carry a film. It sounds like this one was more of a “female ensemble” approach but without real star power it takes some great word of mouth to make a commercial success.
I saw the trailer on YouTube and it looked horrible.
no male is gonna go see a movie about the accidental killing of a chipppedales stripper, 50% of the audience out the window automatically
ha ha, love it.... Hollyweird may want to shove that crap at the public but people aren’t buying....
Wonder Woman is a good “female empowerment” movie, though. I wasn’t too enamored with the story/plot/screenplay, but Gal Gadot is spectacular! Only the 2nd movie I’ve seen in theaters in a longggg time.
Well the budget for this movie was between $10 and 20 Million, they will make their money back it eventually.
That was an incredibly awful movie....
and her acting was rather flat and mono-tone
Next month will be make or break with her movie “Atomic Blonde” coming out, cold war picture and one I want to see.
Right; and as a huge Ghost in the Shell fan I was really looking forward to this revision — until it became ‘wait and see’ based on SJ’s virulent hate politics, and ‘no way’ once it became clear that between the writing and SJ’s failure to act there was only a shell and no Ghost.
It’s almost as if these rabid anti-Trump actors (and Whedon as director) have erased or subsumed their own selves in slavery to lefty politics. Bit of a shame for Firefly fans as we all assumed Whedon was on the side of the rebellious Firefly crew, not the control-left “Union” (or, we might say, Uniparty).
For the life of I do not understand why people in Hollywood do not understand this? Are they not supposed to be professionally tuned into what the public wants? They keep spewing out this dark, ant-male, PC garbage that no one wants! Just stop!
It seem as plain as the Roman nose on my face that a solid, genuinely uplifting (not corny) movie is going to absolutely clean up.
Here’s the deal, simplified for those lacking perception, the world is a basket case. A lot of people are truly hurting. The public is longing for inspirational fare that overcomes and triumphs. I think that is one of the reasons the movie, “Blind Side” did so well.
Staggering they insist on trying to sell this same old intolerable dreck.
I didn’t see it, but it sounded to anti-female, not anti-male.
Oh, so you also saw her in the movie, Lucy, huh?
And these types of movies have done very well in the past. But Hollywood has abandoned feel good movies for politically driven, violent, and darker ones.
Yep. Mrs WBill saw the trailer and commented, “I saw that movie when it was called “The Hangover”. And again, when it was “Hangover II”. And again, when it was “Hangover III”. “
