Last week people were reckoning that the new raunchy comedy Rough Night would revolutionize Hollywood.
After all the movie, which stars Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell and Zoe Kravitz, is the first R-rated comedy in almost 20 years to be directed by a woman (Lucia Aniello, best known for directing Broad City). So its success counted for a good deal.
But that was then. Rough Night has wound up commercially comatose, taking just $8.1 million from over 3,000 movie theaters over the weekend at the U.S. box office. The movie, about a bachelorette party in Miami that spirals out of control when one of their party accidentally kills a male stripper, limped into eighth place in the US top 10 and was even beaten by the Mandy Moore shark movie 47 Meters Down.
Now that it has flopped, Rough Nights lasting legacy will be as a cautionary tale. But the inquest into why it has bombed is only just beginning.

Yeah. I do.
I miss the days of Red Skelton and Jackie Gleason.
Drive Ins were killed the adoption of the all color television schedule and national daylight saving time.
Stock up on antibiotics and antiviral medications first.
Me too.
Libs could screw up a hand car wash. It’s what they do.
Her nipple to boob ratio is way to small into deal breaker
Here she is without makeup
She isn’t a draw IN Marvel. She’s thrown in cuz they need a girl. Trust me, The Avengers would be just fine without her.
In fact, the truly interesting babes they have are downplayed, like Siff in “Thor” and “The Wasp” (although we’ll see more of Evangeline Lily.
I find Johannsen as obnoxious in her parts as I do Samuel L. Snakes-on-a-Plane Jackson. Just phoning it in.
Not just her. The hot Jenny Lawrence only got “Joy” to $56m on a budget of $60m, meaning you’ve got at least another $30m P&A on top of that.
“Passengers,” at $110m, grossed $100m so far, but that doesn’t include P&A (again, figure at least $30m).
In short, since “Hunger Games,” the only woman who has headlined a winner is Gal Gadot.
I have a really good script I’m trying to get done about a basketball team near an Indian reservation with a one-legged Marine vet as their coach. It’s PG, funny, touching and completely counter-PC at every turn.
I haven't seen this chick movie, but that was my immediate impression on seeing the trailer. This movie looks like a remake of "Very bad things" with all the genders reversed.
It is exactly like female ghost busters. They simply flip genders on everyone and think it will work.
No, it doesn't work.
And they can't even blame Milo for this flop, like they did when he slimed Leslie Jones who starred in Ghostbusters 2.0.
Great points. Lawrence’s popularity seems to have been exaggerated. People would have seen Hunger Games no matter who the lead actress was. Most of these actors from franchise movies aren’t a draw on their own.
Maybe people don't care for their comedies laced with murder?
I am trying to figure out, what was the target audience for this?
Certainly not the teen crowd nor the adult crowd, from the sounds of it not males either. So immature females over 17 who have very poor taste?
How many of those are going to movies when they could be hanging out in bars and living the plot?
That is Charlize Theron not SJ. :) Another major liberal but....
The Chineese paid for the flop? I wonder how much they will lose before they realize liberal Hollywood is dieing.
“no male is gonna go see a movie about the accidental killing of a chipppedales stripper, 50% of the audience out the window automatically”
not quite entirely true: adolescent boys will take their girlfriends to any movie the girlfriend wants to see IF they think it’ll help get the girlfriend to put out ...
Romy and Michelles High School Reunion
really funny movie, and excellent on so many levels.
Sounds like an extremely dumb plot.
