A raging forest fire in central Portugal sent flames sweeping over roads, killing at least 61 people, many of them trapped in their cars as they tried to flee, officials said Sunday. The country's prime minister called it "the biggest tragedy" that Portugal has experienced in decades and declared three days of national mourning.

Horrible. Could easily happen in the mountains of SoCal under the wrong conditions.

Don’t discount islamists. Certainly, Israel has experienced similar fires. Some evidence that islamists have started fires in the USA.

Plus, the Prime Minister said today that since there were so many fatalities, he did not want to discuss causes of the fires today.

There are multiple fires throughout Portugal right now. Certainly, that’s not unprecedented, but it is suspicious.

I read books about The Great Peshtigo Fire (which was overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire that same year).

The fire was so intense that it turned the sand on the streets into glass. That's how hot it was.

Re: “Don’t discount Islamists.”

Good point.

I read the Commentary magazine blog almost every day, and they have had several stories about wild fire arson in Israel.

I never thought about that in Portugal, but the proximity to North Africa certainly raises a caution flag.

Immediately after the apartment fire catastrophe in London, I suspected Islamic arson, but authorities have released almost no information on the cause, except for the exterior cladding catching fire.
