After Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot, the Navy named an Independence-class littoral combat ship after her.
I wonder if they will do the same for Congressman Steve Scalise?
Fair is fair
No, but if Hillary wins in 2020, the shooter will get an aircraft carrier and an elementary school.
I have a general issue with naming ships after people who are alive. I pray they don’t name it after him for decades.
I’m for it. A destroyer though, not a glorified speedboat.
Independence-class Clittoral combat ship after her.
Still maintain we need to honor real American warriors like Lakota chief Crazy Horse. USS Crazy Horse has a nice ring to it and and would honor the guy who beat the US Army.....Navy guys are smiling at the symbolism already.
Heh I wondered the same thing
If 0bama were still in office, he’d have already named one after Hodgkinson.
And a street in every Democrat controlled city in the US.
Fair is fair.
Didn’t Giffords speachify for gun control?
Congressman Scalise should create a law banning gun free zones.
I wonder if the rats purposely shoot people to get ships named after them...?!?
The USS Gabbi Gifford should have been named the USS Gaby Hayes.
“The USS Gabbi Gifford should have been named the USS Gaby Hayes.”
Irreverent sailors will ‘tag’ the vessel with a name of their own. But “Gabby Hayes” will probably be the only printable one.
I concur with Vermont LT. I believe that US Navy ships should NOT be named for living people, only deceased, and then limited to military veterans. Thus, I’ve opposed the Navy naming ships after still living president George H.W Bush & Jimmy Carter. May Congressman Scalise recover and live a very long life.
The Navy should stop naming ships after people.
The Navy needed to name a ship after Giffords like they needed another hole in the head.
Agree. Go back to the Code on this.
United States ship naming conventions for the U.S. Navy were established by Congressional action since at least 1862. Title Thirteen, Chapter Six of the US Code enacted that year reads in part,
The vessels of the Navy shall be named by the Secretary of the Navy under direction of the President according to the following rule:
Sailing-vessels of the first class shall be named after the States of the Union, those of the second class after the rivers, those of the third class after the principal cities and towns and those of the fourth class as the President may direct.
Section 1531
