As a business, it is failing, said CEO of the American Cable Association (ACA), Matthew Polka, during an episode of C-SPAN Communicators this week. It is very, very difficult for a cable operator in many cases to even break even on the cable side of the business, which is why broadband is so important, giving consumers more of a choice that we cant give them on cable.

We cut the cord 3 years ago, put up an antenna outside, use a comp to stream and get well over 200 options to watch, movies and other stuff for free... why support the left in hollywood and NYC?
We just dumped cable and are loving roku.
There are continued cracks in the wall of leftist cultural domination in the US.
I would hope that some day we see glenn Reynolds suggestion that the very generous tax break accorded the film industry be repealed and dry the money up that funds the cancer.
A diCaprio of the future might not be able to fly around in his jet while lecturing us peons on our need to conserve energy.
After that? Online university degrees. Again, contain and eliminate the funding of the cultural cancer.
I cut the cord 3 months ago $285 a month savings, bought a Skystream Box One on amazon for $149 now watch anything I want. I dont miss cable at all in fact this is way better than cable. Have a antenna for locals.
It’s not just a dumping within the US. You can find the same trend in Europe...particularly in Germany. You go ask anyone under the age of 25....probably over 90-percent will tell you that they are streaming off the five or six services possible.
People that live in the country would love to have cable TV/data. It is all relative.
Speaking of Germany. the founder of Gab, the free speech alternative to Twitter said they were signing up around a thousand Germans a day there. Its so many signing up Gab installed a German translation feature.
We now live in the middle of nowhere. A 100 mile antenna from Lowes, a signal amplifier from Amazon, Roku and DSL = more to watch than we ever were willing to pay for with cable/sat, but for free.
I dumped cable almost two years ago. It seemed the price, taxes, and fees went up every month. To get me back, I got basic cable + CSPAN for $15 for one year. I'm giving that up after the year. Except for CPAN's Washington Journal, I still watch Antenna TV and the other options I went to when I cut the cable.
So, if they now have commercials to pay for their programming (like free over-the-air TV), why do they charge so much for their "service"?
I have been waiting months to sign up. What gives???
It’s an interesting episode what is driving this movement of Germans to Gab.
Since the German gov’t can’t control the chatter on Facebook and Twitter...they’ve gone to identifying people and comments....as hate-speech. They give FB 24 hours to remove the comment or fine them 50-million Euro (per item). Naturally, this has worried FB and they act very quickly....deleting the comment and then terminating the account with the individual involved. Since there is an office in Germany for FB....they can physically touch them and ‘torment’ them as they like.
Well...in the case of Gab...no office and no physical way of touching them (at least not yet). I expect by the end of 2017....at least 10-percent of German FB users will have left FB....going over to Gab. The German government might be stupid enough to say they’ve successfully shut down comments and hate-speech (in their mind) but all they did is chase the public from one media device to another.
How does that work? The signal travels for about sixty miles before fading away.
Wife still wont give up basic cable, but we hardly watch tv. Even though with KODI we can watch anything, we still dont. There just isnt that much I like to watch, but is nice to be able to get movies and such occasionally....
Recently I found Nvidia Shield Pro. Holy cow. Faster than the Roku. It has everything a Roku has PLUS the app KODI. Can't say enough about it.
We discontinued Cable when we moved 8 years ago. Originally we just had movies and Blockbuster (in the day); now, with NetFlix and Hulu and Youtube Channels we can see everything we would desire to. I believe we pay $30 for both services plus the cost of the Interweb. Other than missing “trending” shows and sporting events that I would not have watched anyway, there has been no impact.
Nearest city is around 60 miles away, with the amplifier and antenna up about 30 feet we get 32 digital channels - its mostly single stations but with sub channels, for example one has 7 sub channels each a niche, like one does all Star trek from 5 until 9 PM, another is shows with hero or heroines, as in themes, We also get all the legacy networks CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox. as well as religious and private local stations.
With Roku we also can pick up pretty much everything that we used to pay for, and a comp can find almost anything online.
My husband was wondering if you are able to watch NFL at all?
