Designer Thom Browne on Dressing Melania Trump: ‘It Shouldn’t Become a Political Thing’
Footwear News ^ | June 5, 2017 | Rachael Allen

Even before President Donald Trump took office in January, there was talk about which fashion designers would — and would not — be interested in dressing first lady Melania Trump.

In November, designer Sophie Theallet wrote an open letter to fellow designers asking them to join her in refusing to dress or associate with the first lady. Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Phillip Lim and Derek Lam all said publicly that they would not dress Melania. Others including Diane Von Furstenberg, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and Thom Browne said they would.

In new interview with Surface magazine, Thom Browne shared more insight into his position on dressing the first lady. Browne also had the opportunity to dress former first lady Michelle Obama for Barack Obama’s second inauguration.

“The thing with Michelle Obama came about just through a relationship with her stylist,” Browne said. “She appreciated what I did. I wanted to create something specifically for her. I think she’s incredible. She’s so strong and smart. I created something that reflected that. There’s nothing political behind it at all.”

As for the response from designers about Melania Trump, Browne had this to say:

“I think it’s unfortunate, the response that the current first lady [Melania Trump] got from designers in regards to dressing her. We all should respect the office, and it shouldn’t become a political thing. The appreciation of what you do is what it should be. Dressing [Donald Trump] would be one thing. But with her, I think it’s different.”

It doesn’t appear that the first lady has worn Browne’s designs publicly yet. Recently, she’s worn looks by Ralph Lauren, Monique Lhuillier and Dolce & Gabbana. Dolce & Gabbana designer Stefano Gabbana has publicly defended dressing Melania and her fashion choices, including that $50,000 D&G jacket she wore during President Trump’s recent trip abroad.

Let’s just face it. She would look great in any clothing line. . .designer or not. My mother always told us growing up that wearing designer clothes especially the ones that indicated the name was free advertising for the company. Needless to say. . .no designer stuff for us. . .and we were the better for it. Designer clothes/labels certainly cause a lot of heartaches in school. . . I’m for uniforms.

I’ve always been in favor of uniforms too. It just simplifies things, and takes away a lot of distraction.

But I recently saw a news story about a school that had rules about long braid-extensions, and I was kind of stumped over that:

I hope Melania doesn't invite him to dress her after that comment. He doesn't deserve to be able to polish her shoes.

Marc Jacobs has nice cloths.

So do the guys who are willing to dress her.

So long Marc Jacobs. I hope you go the way of Target.

No one ever had this problem with the previous first lady, but then again it was impossible to dress a woman devoid of beauty and grace with a dress of beauty and grace. If any couture designer complained, it would have been obvious.

As a teacher I can tell you that uniforms are great. What is sad are the kids who come in on Monday w/ dirty, stained shirts & pants from Thursday & Friday. Some people may scoff, but we’ve had kids come w/ holes & ill fitting clothes. Lord knows what they would do without uniforms. You feel bad for the kids. It’s not their fault.

Also more & more parent(s) have NO idea about what is appropriate. We hear stories from the high school & some girls pretty much come dressed as pole dancers on no uniform days.

I have been to a few high school games for urban schools. The cheerleaders wear no underwear. It shows underneath their one pieces.

I think I’ve encountered some of those parents when I’ve gone to Jury Duty. They don’t even know how to dress themselves ;-)

I subbed this year for the first time after retiring from education quite a few years ago.(Sub crisis in the local district). I was appalled that parents would send their children (prek - high school)looking like street walkers. Then I saw some of the parents. . .then I saw some of the teachers. My mother would have had a fit if I even thought about dressing that way.

Melania would look good in an old feed sack with the oats still sticking to it! Couldn’t make Moochie look good in ANYTHING.
