The Professor's tenure at ESPN is coming to an end.

NFL insider John "The Professor" Clayton is leaving ESPN as part of the sweeping layoffs at the Worldwide Leader in Sports, sources tell Sporting News. ESPN and Clayton both declined SN's request for comment, but Clayton confirmed his status in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.

The well-respected Clayton has served as a senior NFL writer and commentator at ESPN for 23 years.

Clayton was one of ESPN's best reporters. Probably the reason why he was fired.

Terrible. There was no flash to him. Just informed reporting. I get his 3 hour podcasts on weekends + his “Cold Hard Facts” podcast during the week. It’s not the end of the world but I wish he was more judgmental on athletes who screw up.

His podcasts are mostly football. Irish Meinke gets old but the other regular callers are good starting with the 1st one.

I guess he will be staying home in his room listening to SLAYER and eating Chinese food. And his mom won’t have to worry about when he does his TV Segment anymore.

One funny commercial

Clayton is an unlimited fount of pro football knowledge. It is no mean trick keeping track of the full rosters and taxi squads of 28 teams.

Probably the best football reporter on the air. Has been for a long time.

White, older, and likely not Left wing enough for the Extreme Socialist Propaganda Network.

ESPN wants more Anti-American Kaepernicks.

ESPN should hire Obama as its LGBTQWERTY liaison and color commentator.

A Pittsburgh native. Was the local Steelers beat writer until he caught Chuck Noll holding a spring OTA in pads, which was a violation of NFL rules, and reported it.

The team was penalized a draft pick. The Rooney Family declared him persona-non-grata, and cut off all team contact with him (which effectively ended his job as the beat writer).

He had to move to Seattle to continue with his career covering football. Anyone who stood up to and suffered the wrath of the Democrat suck-up Rooney Family is A-OK in my book.

“Probably the best football reporter on the air. Has been for a long time.”

And that’s why he was let go. He’s an old white man that objectively reports hard facts and insight. He will be replaced by a young 20-something minority that is barely literate and covers “human events” in sports.

Old white man? I’m older 63 and even I look better than him. Mortensen seemed a bit more on the intellectual side. So did another who has since died. A son with the same name, bald. I’m saying the network goes for the flash and the tits. Throw in horny black athletes and you have tension.

Clayton had kind of a Tweety Bird charm, and he wasn’t political. I’ll miss him.
