Until a few days ago, it was a tasty but obscure cake from Slovenia.
But a quip by Pope Francis about Donald Trump's girth catapulted the Slovenian dessert putizza, also known as potica, to international attention.
Now Slovenia has decided to capitalise on the dessert’s new-found fame by seeking official European Union recognition for the toothsome treat so that authentic recipes are not messed around with.
It's being dubbed “the Melania effect” - it was to the First Lady that the Pope made the joke last Wednesday, when the Trumps visited the Vatican for the first time as part of their nine-day international trip.
“What do you feed him, putizza?” the pontiff asked, in an apparent attempt to make small talk. He made the jest in his native Spanish and it initially appeared to get lost in translation....

I thought the Pope’s comment was insulting to both the President and the First Lady.
He’s smaller than both of them——probably felt puny so he lashed out. What a guy !

It was somewhat insulting, but then, His Holiness prides himself on informality and shows of bemusement.
He likes to break ranks sometimes and get chummy.
First Pope I’m aware of who wants to be your ‘friend’.
There is both plus and minus to that level of informality.
Melania handled it just fine. She is accustomed to being around high profile people. She is used to being stared at, as a former model. All this helps her maintain her poise.
“Who am I to judge” will be his epitaph.
Melania will now boost Slovenia’s economy by $100 million this year as Trump fans and the curious rush to buy putizza.
probably hoped Melania would turn up in hot pants with her butt checks hanging out like Michelle wore in public...

(checked it out) Melania's home village is only a three-hour ride from Venice. But for the pen of a mapmaker, she's Italian. Did she take Italy by storm? I've seen NO evidence that she didn't.
