"A big part of ADHD is teachers teaching crap in slow motion. Thake a kid with an average or better IQ and try to teach them socialist sesame street for 8 hours a day and the only way to keep their attention would be to drug them."

I agree with you. Both of my kids actively sought advanced courses in high school, because the teachers taught "too slow" in the regular classes.

OBTW, when I was in elementary school, one teacher sat me next to the window and told me that I did not have to pay attention, but I could not disrupt the class. I spent all day looking out the window and getting "As."

This was a vehicle for the school district to fire these two teachers.

I would bet dollars to donuts they were encouraged by higher ups to “have fun” and give the award to the kid, and it would be viewed by the school staff as “funny”.

I think the school wanted these teachers gone.

Not defending the teachers but schools keep on teachers that are perverts and do far, far, far worse things that hand out awards that people would be bowling over at a celebrity roast.

I would bet the teachers are straight white males. They don’t say in the story.

I had a teacher do something like this in the 8th grade. I understood the joke.

Another girl named Mary Brown and myself (she and I sat together) got the “Back of the room” award because we always sat way in the back of the room.

Am laughing as I think of it now.

In fact this one just came back to me.

In the 9th grade, which would be the end of Junior High, in the school newspaper all the kids leaving to high school would write their “last will and testament”. The Science teacher wrote mine as she knew me quite well as was Editor of the school newspaper.

Won’t quote it all..but remember what she said about my “ability to always read the guide sheet”. The Science teacher was good friends with the Home Economics teacher and knew that, yes I did not always read the guide sheet like I should have.

Do you see me crying like a brat over it? No, I’m laughing about it to this day and try harder to read the darn thing.

I have ADHD. It made medical school...interesting.

But, if my wonderful K-12 teachers hadn't stayed on my ass about it, I never would have discovered all the workarounds I would need later.

If I had been labeled with a "disability", and treated with kid gloves, I would never have gotten into college, never mind having a medical career.

"Have a better idea, put a dunce cap on her head during the school year. "

I used to be an unbeliever of this whole ADHD/Autism thing -- until our youngest came around. It's real, and it's a difficult thing for a child to deal with.

There's a real epidemic of this going around, and I firmly believe it's related to the explosion of anti-depressant use, primarily in women. My wife became hooked on these things by her doctor several years back. She was going through a tough time and doctors are pushing these drugs like crazy. When she became pregnant, the doctor told her not to stop, as the withdrawal would be difficult during her pregnancy. Our son now has demonstrable difficulties in school, and is struggling to keep his head above water.

Now before you go thinking this is a parenting problem: Just this past week our oldest son and daughter graduated from Purdue University. One has a degree in Astronautical Engineering, and the other has a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Both were carried by my wife prior to her anti-depressant use.

This is a very serious problem in our country right now. Many people are blaming vaccines for Autism and ADHD, but I truly believe that the real evil are anti-depressant drugs. And the pharma companies will continue to allow us to believe that the problems are vaccine-related, because if we ever discovered the truth, it would truly kill their golden goose.

I, too, have “the Gift”.

In spite of it, some disciplines are quite easy for me.

On my way to a doctorate, I instructed gross, neuroanatomy and histology.

After that program, I went to “vocational” school and completed a surgical residency.

I am now a retired Chief of a major regional hospital and spend my time amusing myself, on the lanai, translating Cicero and Virgil.

Oh, well...

The next deficit to correct is Attic Greek (self-taught) and Homer.

I don’t bother anyone except the Love of my Life and she understands (sometimes).

“Many people are blaming vaccines for Autism and ADHD”

Many people blaming the vaccines are the parents of those kids too! If it were one or two parents I’d be like it’s nonsense but when it’s parent after parent after parent and these parents have very interesting stories to tell have to be inclined to believe it.

Many parents are opting out of vaccines and if you’ve noticed there have been epidemics of Measles breaking out. Don’t blame them, after stories I’ve read/heard will deal with the funny red dots rather than the nightmare these parents have to deal with.

Another thing, Amish kids are don’t get vaccines and they don’t have this crap.

I have a son who would have been eligible for that award————40 years ago.

He would have treasured the award and hung it on his wall.

Amish kids don't have vaccines

They also don't have phones, tablets, texts, tweets, instagrams, music, headphones, games and porn 24-7.

Lighthearted teasing from fellow students is one thing.

The same thing from teachers is quite another.

There was a man in my church that I grew up in, that when ever he saw me, would come up and put his arm around my head and give me a noogie and say "Hello David".

Always had a big smile whenever he saw me.

He was a leader in the youth group and I was one of the squirreliest kids, very loud at times and high strung.

There was a lot of disfunction in my home and my parents eventually divorced after my freshman year of HS. After that, my dad pretty much was non-existent in my life.

Take a high strung, squirrely boy, with disfunction in the home, then a non-existent dad and that's a recipe that could cause disaster. But it was the love and attention of guys AND teachers, like Chuck, who impact a young boys life.

Young boys want and need to rough house.
A noogie from an adult is rough housing.
As I look back, that arm around my head, locking me in, was a hug.

I think back to the teachers who made the biggest impact and they were the ones who made me feel just a little bit special.

It's that little bit that sparks a fire in a childs life.

I'm 54 now.
Most people say I look like a football player.
I saw Chuck within the last year, at a church function, that drew a lot of former attendees back.

Chuck is no longer large and boisterous. But old, thin and frail. I think he may have had a minor stroke at one time.
So now I AM the one, gently putting my arm around his head and vigorously but gently, giving Chuck a light noogie, saying "Hello Chuck".

I took him aside when I last saw him, and explained how now, as a grown up, I understand how I was as a kid. And what exactly he meant to that young kid and this incorrigible adult.

I was glad to see him then. I have wanted to thank him for a long while, and didn't want the words to be too late and unspoken.

Chuck liked the incorrigible kids.
I think Chuck was one of those incorrigible kids.
Me??? .... I;m still working on staying incorrigible :)

They do during Rumspringa. (add drugs and alcohol to that list as well) During which they have to make a choice: become Amish or leave. 90% become Amish.

Think about that statement. Most kids 20 30 40 years ago, more so if they were boys but maybe a few girls would have. Today they’d laugh about it now as they did then. This is how much our society has changed. We got stupid awards like this at summer camp! Now these kids are such snowflakes they can’t take anything.

Yea am going to say it and don’t care who’s offended sounds like this kid is either too stupid to pass her classes in school because she just can’t pay attention or she’s a snowflake 2.0 either way she will never make it in society.

School was a place where we had lots of laughs back in my day - and teachers gave us similar “awards” all the time.

Libtards have turned the schools into concentration camps with no humor allowed. Glad I’m not there anymore.

A big part of ADHD is teachers teaching crap in slow motion.

I think you’ve put your finger on a major element.

I’ve had success teaching some ADHD things very rapidly far beyond their grade level...but give them something else to do when you have to stop and repeat things for the others, or you’ll lose them.
