You are an airline passenger enroute to your destination. You look out the window and see fighters escorting your aircraft. To put it politely, they are not there for YOUR safety.

Good post. You are one of the few that understand why they are their. They can do absolutely nothing to resolve a problem in the aircraft. They are there to shoot you down if the Aircraft is taken over an presents a danger.
However no aircraft will be taken over by hostiles after 9-11. Passengers today know that hostiles will be their death and as such will fight the hostiles and contain them or kill them. I prefer the latter.
9-11 was successful because it was a new and unique battle plan by the bad guys. In the past it made absolute sense to acquiesce to demands as one assumed the hijackers did not want to die. The new model is different. We must assume they are willing to die thus each and ever person on board has a primal instinct to survive and will attack the hijackers.
