I wonder if his “defacing” was him simply trying to cop a souvenir.

Think there’s more here than meets the eye...

Care to elaborate?

Did I miss something in my original post?
I think the young man's father is a Civil War historian, and that Noah shares his father's interest.
So, this isn't just some dumb yokel grabbing something and pulling on it, or swiping a "trophy", or "souvenir".

I wonder if his defacing was him simply trying to cop a souvenir. If his father is a Civil War buff/historian, I would be puzzled at why his kid would want to "cop a souvenir", since he's colloborated with his father on a Civil War project, and obviously knows more than your average souveniring schlub.
I went to a LOT of the Civil War battlefields when I was in my teens, and would have NEVER thought of carrying something off.
Kind of like robbing a sunken Navy ship with unrecovered sailers - it's a tomb.

So are you saying that you think he was trying to steal something because he values Civil War history? Or that he was trying to make some sort of statement? Not following.
And whether he did or “some dumb yokel” did it, it still caused quite a bit of damage.

So, the explanations of the prosecution by the local US attorney don't make any sense.

If I went to Gettysburg or Shiloh and found a spent round or some other small artifact, I might be tempted to take it home. But I have to imagine most of those battlefields are pretty well picked over by now.
I would probably do the same if I found something at the Little Bighorn too. The Custer massacre has always fascinated me.

Okay, got it. Thanks. I guess my confusion can be attributed to the fact that I did not read the entire piece at the source.
