Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted early Wednesday that ordering would begin later in the day.
Musk said the tiles will be sold worldwide. Theyll go to U.S. customers first this year and to other countries next year. He gave no other details.
Palo Alto-based Tesla, which makes electric cars, announced last fall that it would produce the tiles with solar power company SolarCity Corp. Tesla and SolarCity completed a merger in November.
The glass tiles are designed to look like a traditional roof, with options that replicate slate or terracotta tiles. They contain photovoltaic cells that Tesla says are invisible from the street.

There are 5 Tesla charging stations in my hometown of DeFuniak Springs. Sort of surprising considering it is a small town, with a population around 5,000.
Odd. The article is new, but the news is old.
The story said they were cheaper and would last longer than normal solar panels but gave no numbers so, like most things from the MSM, was worthless.
There is nothing wrong with solar if it is cheap enough to stand on its own (including energy storage costs to power my house at night).
GREAT idea! If it’s price competitive with regular roofing, it’s definitely a good way to go partially solar.
My main concern would be its resistance to hail of golf ball or larger size.
I will definitely consider it for the next roof I have to replace.
Unquotable Bloomberg has some money info:

Seems dependent on subsidies for economic justification.
Lifetime warranty- life of the home.
And Musk’s company(ies) will receive massive governmental subsidies built in to the federal budget by partisan democrats under threat of a shutdown if their enviro-weenie green scam isn’t fully funded in perpetuity.
Oh, and then they’ll outsource the work to China, get ripped off by being forced to compete against some cheap knock-offs built by Chinese slave labor, then either file bankruptcy or scale back to nearly nothing and coast solely on the largesse guaranteed by the legislation.
Meanwhile...
GE to sell refrigerators to cool food.
Ford to sell cars to transport people around.
Oster to make blenders to blend vegetables.
Apple to make computers that compute.
Musk gets a LOT of government money. Tesla would not still be in business without it. Does GM still get $10,000 for every Chevy Volt l wonder? The US Government should not be picking winners and losers.
“My main concern would be its resistance to hail of golf ball or larger size.”
yep. not unusual in eastern Colorado, starting at the foot of the Rockies and extending to the eastern border.
“Lifetime warranty- life of the home.”
or until Tesla or its successors go bankrupt from servicing the warranty - whichever comes first.
Life time of the house on the physical tile and 30 years on the solar power aspect.
Yeah, that’s a good point to keep in mind. Seems to me there were changes made in the law to require accounting for warranty risks- but I’m not at all clear on that.
They make roof tiles that look pretty normal but are in fact solar cells.
Face it, those eyesores you posted would not make it in most places.
Why bother when home dilithium crystal chambers are less expensive and just as practical?
Speaking of dilithium crystals, why did the Enterprise not carry spares?
I agree, there are a lot of good uses for solar, especially smaller devises that demand less energy. Yep. Solar is perfect for many applications, not all, not yet.
This doesn't look bad at all. I've seen them like this with darker roofs in the front of the house too. Nearly blend right in.
