For a brief moment, as tears filled Todd Pletcher’s steel-blue eyes, the normally dispassionate trainer let the world see how it felt for him to cast aside the weight of so many Kentucky Derby disappointments.

Pletcher knows the narrative all too well. Despite winning a record seven Eclipse Awards for Top Trainer and ranking as the leading purse winner in history at age 49, he’s the guy who’s saddled almost 50 horses for the Derby and won just once.

Do you know how many of my horses have won the Kentucky Derby?

None.

Zip zilch nada nichts.....

It might help if I had a thoroughbred, or even a horse.

I tried to enter one of my dogs with a monkey as the jockey.

The Racing Commission said no dogs and they didn’t think Stephen Colbert was licensed to be a jockey.

Oh the sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home.....

A New York horse — Brooklyn Boyz Stables, with the logo of two Brooklyn Dodger Bs. (As a native New Yorker, I can’t help but be pleased by that.)

And the #13 horse, Girvin, hs connections to where I went to college.

I hope Viola does some serious PR now and to let his detractors kiss his shoes.

Not run at all before January? I think that was the winner.
