Big Government: We hear endless lamentations about the alleged gender pay gap. But what about the other, very real, pay gap? The one where government workers make far more than their private sector counterparts.
To get a clear picture of public-private pay gap, the Congressional Budget Office looked at pay scales from 2011 through 2015, controlling for things like location, occupation, veteran status, demographics, as well as education.
It found that among those with a high school diploma, federal civilian workers earned 34% more, on average, than similar workers in the private sector. But government workers also get benefits that are 93% more generous than the private sector. When you combine the two, these federal workers get 52% more than their private sector counterparts.
Those with a bachelor's degree made 21% more in government, the CBO found, and those with a master's degree made 5% more in wages and benefits. The only group that did worse in government were those with a doctorate, who earned an average 18% less, on average, in the federal government than in the private sector.

An even bigger pay Gap is those in Congress compared to those not in Congress.
They were allowed to unionize, thats why
Trump should tweet this.
And Civil Service protections were put in place to protect the poor, disadvantaged civil servant.
Go to http://www.openthebooks.com/ to check on the salaries paid government workers.
One thing I noticed was the +$50,000 salaries for Post Office Custodians.
How much do Custodians earn in the private sector? Like maybe $20,000.
Drain the swamp at all levels of government.
True but considering the massive train wreck he inherited, all the changes he *ought* to be doing are just plain and simple going to take time.
They took years to implement.
It will take more than his first 100 days to correct.
No, unionizing has nothing to do with it. Federal employees cannot strike, thus rendering their unions toothless. Also unions cannot bargain for wages or benefits. An awful lot of the wage gap has to do with the flat lining of most private sector jobs.
The huge difference is the pensions. Many government workers get pensions plus 401Ks or some equivalent. And only pay a small slice toward their own pensions. That is why almost every state and many large cities have crushing pension obligations. Get rid of the pensions and you will come very close to equalizing the compensation.
That's not the worse of it. Government pensions can kick in after only 20 years of service. That means that a 23-year-old after college can get a government job and retire with full pension at 43. FULL PENSION FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.
These pensions should at least kick in only after 64 like private sector pensions.
State workers also abuse their pensions by retiring in their 40s, then moving to low-tax states. This means that the tax payers in those states don't even get the benefit of the retirees paying back into the system. This is why we have so many damn New Yorkers in North Carolina.
Here’s the deal. They used to not make more than their “civilian counterparts”. But that was when we had a booming economy. Now with all their “step increases” and “cola” they make way more plus they have gold plated insurance while the ones who are paying for it all, us idiots out struggling and clawing to make a living have shit insurance.
public servants used to understand they were giving up income so they could perform a service that was close to altruism. Now it is feeding at the public trough at our expense plus torturing us by going as slow as they possibly can while making sure they take all their “breaks”. Been in line at the USPS lately?
I resent people working for the government. They whine and moan. We call government lawyers “stall fed horses” unlike those of us who do child abuse case work at our own expense, defend people from government torment for little or no money and battle to keep government off all our backs while listening to cracks even from freepers about what crap humans lawyers are.
Well, this has evolved into a statement about, hey, if you need a lawyer, it is a dead serious business, and that, but for lawyers fighting government at every turn, y’all would be worse off than you already are.
We all are paying these government hacks’ salaries. It is backwards. They should be working for us, not us working for them. Hold their dragging feet to the fire.
Not true for Fed!
At least FedGov employees now follow these rules and have since 1983 (maybe 1985).
State , county & local have their own rules and very accordingly.
The lucrative FedGov retirement was the old CSRS system, very few of them are left in the USG now.

Hubbie has a small pension from a private sector job he was at for 16 years - can’t touch it till his full social security retirement age. Praying it is still there in 7 years...
Many pensions like federal pensions kick in after 50. You are right, they should kick in when SS kicks in at 65 to 67. Also, pensions should be taxed in the states where they are earned. There is no reason at all why North Carolina should tax that income which was earned back in New York years ago. North Carolina will get the sales tax and the property tax.
If a basketball player plays a game in New York he is taxed for that income in New York even if he is on the Chicago Bulls.
bs, the federal employees are the worst offenders, whining all the time about how their civilian counterparts are cleaning up. Watch any federal office building and see how they run out of there at 4:29 and get in their new cars and drive out to the suburbs. Disgusting.
Was there any mention that 33% of these overpaid Doolittles are Africans from the 13% of total Africans in the US population.
Lawyers run every branch of federal and state governments. All of them.
Agree completely. I lived for a year in a new development in Waxhaw, a suburb of Charlotte. I'm not sure if they were advertising up in New York, or if it was just a lot of folks inviting their friends down, but the neighborhood was made up of at least 85% transplanted New Yorkers. Most were state workers -- many retired NYPD and NYFD. All were in their 40s and were kicking back enjoying the retired life on New York state pensions.
I don't fault them for taking advantage of the laws -- Trump does that himself and good for him. But the laws need to be changed, especially in light of these states verging on the brim of bankruptcy.
Like I said, “stall fed horses.” And they have not one clue about the real world.
Wrong on kicking in at 50. Interesting idea to tax savings in the state where you saved not where you withdraw. Since NYC has Wall Street maybe any brokerage account held by a company in NYC should pay NY income tax when withdrawals are made.
Soldiers stationed oversees should pay taxes on their pensions earned to Germany, Korea, or Iraq or Afghanistan? Very odd conservative tax proposal. Might get it to Paul Ryan, he may like it.
