Why would a dog attack its owner unless it was being mistreated or threatened by them? Unless it’s psycho pooch.

Sometimes an otherwise calm dog is simply annoyed and has ‘had it up to here’ with something his owner has been doing or making him keep doing. A few weeks ago, I heard of a family dog (Not a Pit, I don’t think) going nuts after the Lady of the House tried to put a too-tight knitted Xmas Sweater on him. The dog went bonkers. The entire family of three people had to run out of the house, and call 911.

I don't know if it has anything to do with this situation, but it is my understanding that it is a popular thing for hipster types to go adopt dogs from the shelter and they like to grab the pitbulls - it gives them, eheheheheh, street cred - and some of those pit bulls were given up to the shelter after they were abused/trained to be very mean. So the dog doesn't really have strong loyalty to the new owner as it might if it grew up with him/her.

There is more to this story than we are seeing.

People can unwittingly do things that animals interpret in unexpected ways. It doesn’t have to be abuse. In dogs some of the worst behavior is the result not of abuse but comes from letting the dog dominate... being permissively “nice.” Dogs need firm leadership; they are unhappy when it is not forthcoming.

A person can convey the idea they are submissive by getting down on the floor with the dog, encouraging dominant behavior from the dog, or laying on their back in its presence, etc.

Humans think smiling is friendly, for example. Most animals take it to be threatening.

And some animals take a direct stare to mean a challenge, or in the case of some prey animals, they may view a direct stare to be predatory and react out of fear either fleeing or fighting.

Petting a bird on the back is telling the bird you want to have sex and could get you lightly nipped if the bird doesn’t appreciate your interest and wants you to stop, or it can lead to more severe bites out of frustration if the birds was turned on and doesn’t get what it expects.

Pulling away when nipped by a bird [or a number of other animals] tells it you are weak, and may trigger the bird into more aggressive and demanding behavior - and harder bites.

It’s not psycho- I’d bet she was permissive and the dog did what dogs do when their owner is weak and sending mixed signals.... he took the lead and became alpha dog.

Wake me when we get to the point where we admit that pit bulls are a magnet for the stupid, reckless, and malicious.

Unless it’s psycho pooch.

Pits have been bred for aggressiveness and fighting ability. They are not psycho but just a plain damn dangerous bred!

Just go on the internet and find the resources for numbers of dogs bites treated by ERs and what dogs do the biting.

Pit Bulls have a very short trigger and are known to go after something or some human who startled the dog or when something else startles them. When they bite and latch on, they do not come off.

They are dangerous and should be treated as such.
