I remember reading McTeague. I liked it. It stayed with me.

Thanks, Nick. Interesting story. I didn't know Norris wrote in the area nor that the Stevensons lived down here. I bought a copy of "Frank Norris: Novels and Essays" from the Library of America years ago and never read it. I'll have to dust it off.

I was hiking in Henry Coe Park last weekend, across the valley from Redwood Retreat and Vanumanutagi. I'd forgotten how beautiful it is up there. Miles and miles of mountain vistas in all directions and lots of wildflowers blooming.

Not mentioned that they turned ‘McTeague’ into a movie in 1924: “Greed”, directed by the legendary Erich von Stroheim. The scene at the end in Death Valley remains one of the most unforgettable in cinema history.
