“ortho” = straight
“doxy” - belief
Your concern?
I worked one summer in a mobile home factory in Kalona, Iowa, home to many Amish and Mennonite families. One day, an old Amishman asked, “Eric, do you know why God put Mennonites on the earth?”
Expecting a deep, profound explanation, I said No, I don’t.
“It was to give the Amishman a ride to work.”
Because TV is a sewer. Eye masks work, though. Just take a nap.
He better not pull that crap on a United flight.
why did he fly then?
For him. Lots of duct tape.
Whaaaa! I need AtTeNtIoN!!!!!
Kick him off.
Exodus 20:27: “Neither shalt thou watch television whilst traveling by airplane.”
Yes, there are different levels of observance among the Orthodox Jews. There are hundreds of practices which are on a continuum of strictness. Many of them have to do with the level of modesty of womens' clothing, as to how long the sleeves have to be (to the elbow or to the wrist), high-necked vs. crew neck, etc. Some of them have to do with what it is considered appropriate for men to wear. Some of them have to do with the level of supervision of kosher meat and other products. Some of them have to do with different practices in intricacies of prayer. Etc. etc.
This man actually violated a Jewish precept in causing inconvenience to a lot of other people. He presumably knew that there are movies on long flights and he should have brought his own laptop(s) with appropriate material for his kids to watch.
My concern is that he disrupted a flight based solely on HIS religious belief, where other remedies were available to him, including not flying that particular airline to begin with. He inconvenienced other passengers and crew members.
Were I an executive with that line, I’d recommend that he be put on a no-fly list so this would not recur with that individual.
