Sadly, those two concepts appear to be outmoded in today's de-moralized culture.
On a more practical, personal level ... I long ago realized that many small apologies that people routinely make are unnecessary, even detrimental.
For example, a person about to give a presentation has a cold and "apologizes in advance" for his or her voice.
Don't do that. Everyone will understand you have a cold without your announcing it. Just get on with the presentation.

That’s a good point, very good point. Unfortunately, liberals take any conservative apology as a sign a weakness...something to be ruthlessly exploited.
