Overbooking is necessary because there are so many variables involved in people making their flights: unexpected traffic (both customers and aircraft), TSA (which is RIDICULOUS at many airports) and customs...to name just a few. Empty seats are lost forever. I think you would be surprised at how many people who miss their flights are accommodated by the airlines. I always fly standby and even on days when flights seem hopelessly oversold, I am often able to get a seat. I also find that most of the public has a short memory, and when they book their next ticket, price is usually the most important consideration...regardless of what they claim.

My experience has been that the cities involved (boarding, and flight crew) are more predictive of treatment, than airline. I don't care what airline you are on, service and "accommodation of trouble" at Washington National is awful. So is Philly. Surprisingly, perhaps, La Guardia is pretty good.

Delta is hit or miss for me. None of them are good. I detest United. Too many really bad experiences with them. I dread flying with them, and am relieved when flight departs.

If Christie flies 1rst class on the public dime, he oughta stop his gob about UA.

As for if he'd fit in 1rst Class, I've only flown in 1rst Class once. On a domestic flight, and many moons ago. He wouldn't have fit in that seat.

And I lived in the Southwest for decades, without being bitten by a rattlesnake.

But that doesn’t mean rattlesnake bites don’t happen, and it doesn’t make them any less agonizing.

Don’t worry, I’m not flaming you here, I’m just making a point. Have a good day, FRiend.

Pretty much all domestic carriers are awful. United is one of the only I can get out of our local airport. And I have a million or so miles to use up. So I’m stuck with them.

I’ve flown them all but I prefer Southwest.

EWR. A turd, floating in a porta-potty, stuck in a cesspool that is buried in a landfill. I can’t think of one redeeming thing about EWR

I’ve heard good things about Southwest and Alaska Air, but haven’t flown them. Hawaiian Airlines, which actually flies to a lot of destinations both domestically and internationally, is good, but expensive.

I heard on FBN that JetBlue doesn’t overbook. Southwest has good specials, especially if you usually plan a trip ahead of time like I try to do, and the staff are usually great.

“United, Delta and American, they ALL suck. You are better off trying some of the regional carriers if they are available.”

lol

For the record, and to clarify something that virtually nobody has pointed out: this was a United Express flight, not a United Airlines flight, operated by a contractor company called Republic Airways. The crewmembers were not United employees at all.

It’s a regional carrier. It has it’s own CEO, airplanes, pilots, flight attendants, gate agents... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_Airways_Holdings

Their CEO:
As President and Chief Executive Officer at REPUBLIC AIRWAYS HLDGS INC, Bryan K. Bedford made $1,318,116 in total compensation. Of this total $475,000 was received as a salary, $0 was received as a bonus, $0 was received in stock options, $831,085 was awarded as stock and $12,031 came from other types of compensation.

Ahh, United Express, now you’ve hit one of my really sore topics. One time I had to take a United Express flight from Sacramento to San Francisco, connecting there to a United Airlines regular flight (both flights booked through United at the same time). The United Express flight was delayed because of fog (that’s when I found out United Express planes won’t fly in fog)*, and because of the delay I missed my United Airlines flight. When I went to the United check-in to get myself moved to a later UA flight, UA denied any responsibility because I was “not in their computers.” What do you mean, not in your computers, I was just on one of your delayed planes and that’s why I was late. “Well, sir, we don’t operate on the same computer system and we don’t take responsibility for United Express passengers.” I finally ended up basically bribing one of United’s people to get me on a flight.

This was many years ago now, but it still sticks in my head as one of reasons why I hate United.

*I was later told by someone never to fly from Sacramento to San Francisco because of the weather problems, always take a bigger jet from Sacramento to L.A., and then fly from L.A. to your final destination.
