“Most of the last season episodes were weak...”

I recently watched “Chaos on the Bridge”, a documentary I found on Netflix about Gene Rodenberry and the difficulties of the series getting started.

If you are not afraid to hear some “unflattering” things about Gene, and a few others, it is “fascinating”, and you can see how in-fighting and the changes in production personnel affected each season... It explains a lot.

Live Long and Prosper!

So the entire command staff of the TNG was so emotionally fragile they had to drag an alien psychologist around so wouldn’t curl up into the fetal position at the sight of the first bug-eyed alien that said “BOO!”

In what way ? A political officer would have had override authority on the Captain. I cannot remember any instances where she was intimated to have such authority. I could be wrong, since it was shot on video and looks terrible on HDTV, I don’t watch the STNG reruns.

This is why actors should keep their yaps shut about politics. In the 80’s and early 90’s nobody knew what idiocy was in her head and could enjoy the character of the alien Guinan as a character. Her current exposure as a liberal idiot has ruined her older work for many viewers. I used to enjoy Sister Act when it would come on TV, but now cannot divorce the comedic Whoopi from the idiot Whoopi.

As I said, her main function was to offer intelligence on the motives of aliens, not to counsel the command staff or the other 800 crewmen on board. Wanting as much intelligence on the motives of aliens as you can get does not mean you are afraid of them. Do you also think the CIA exists because we are all cringing cowards ? Of course not !

You should embrace any source of intelligence available to you.

I agree, his response was lame. She was turned into an Oprah.

I always wondered how most of them got into Starfleet being such emotional snowflakes.

Troi always got on my nerves.

My biggest favorites are from the first season.

“Where No Man Has Gone Before” (9/22/1966): Sally Kellerman is in this one. Sets the entire series.

“The Corbomite Maneuver” (11/10/1966): Good cat and mouse. Kirk plays “poker” and Spock smiles. Little Gentle Ben guy Clint Howard is fun even though it’s a voice over.

Bailey is a good spoil. He gets too excited and tells Spock it was a human thing called adrenaline and Spock says “I suggest talking to Dr. McCoy to have it removed” and Sulu tell Bailey “try to match wits with Spock you’ll lose every time.” Funny

“Space Seed” of course. (2/16/1967): Can’t add a thing. Sets up the best Star Trek Movie made.

Peabody winner (Harlison Ellison story) “The City on the Edge of Forever” (4/6/1967): Joan Collins is perfect. Nice plot. Not the first time travel episode but the best. My #2 episode.

#1 - “Balance Of Terror” (12/15/1966): Amazing. Tight shots. More like “The Cage”, they redid some scenes from the pilot. Dr. McCoy and Kirk in Kirk’s quarters and the little “why me “ speech. Same scene with Jeffrey Hunter.

Of course Mark Lenard as the Romulan starts his Star Trek career.

Other mention I like is “Arena” (9/19/67). It’s an old Sci-Fi book and it’s plot has been used in dozens of movies and tv. Remember Dennis Quaid and Louis Gosset Jr. in “Enemy Mine”? Same plot.

The only useful “intelligence” or advice should could have given would be 4 things:

1. Picard go back to family vineyard and stomp grapes,
2. Riker just go,
3. Worf ditch that sash it looks like your an outer space “Knights of Columbus” member , member of the “Sons of Italy” or a Shriner,
4. Please, please hit “Control, Alt-Delete” on Data at least once per episode ( or upgrade him to ‘shut up!’).
