Good luck finding sites that will accept the new prisons. Litigation will take years.
Have them build it. The Constitution does not forbid slave labor as a criminal punishment.................
“New York City to close Rikers Island”
Then move new york somewhere else. Those Rikers prisoners deserve a better neighbor.
Ha! I kill us! ;-)
Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin’ on some bikers
He said, hey, I know it’s dangerous,
But it sure beats Riker’s
But the next day he got offed
By the very same bikers

Hmm. I wonder what they have planned for Rikers when there’s no more correction facilities there?
One possibility: a big casino.
Wasn’t it ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK where a wall was built around New York making it a prison.
Maybe someone should suggest that to the mayor.
Might I suggest: Fresh Kills.
Some logic of the late Marion Barry, Washington DC Mayor ‘for life’::
We cant shut down Lorton (prison in VA about 20 miles from DC) cause for some it is the only opportunity to get out of their neighborhood.
At least in Lorton they have a bed, 3 meals a day and TV
After you get over the murders, D.C. is really a safe place!
So, Komerade Wilhelm wants to build more jails to incarcerate ever more disadvantaged young men of color. Just imagine if an evil conservative suggested that. It’s a good thing there is no longer any semblance of a “free press” in this society.....
HA! They’re going to close Rikers?! Where are all criminals going to go then? My guess would be the street corners. Just like where all the mentally ill went when they closed Willowbrook.
The mayor and his rebranded “Tamany Hall’ cronies must have their eyes on some prime waterfront realestate to be picked up for pennies on the dollar
.
That's a first (and a big pile of hooey).
Why do politicians always seem to need a ‘Blue Ribbon Panel’ to make decisions?
De Blasio is far from the only one.
Can’t they reason and think for themselves?
Maybe Boston Dynamics can create a robot politician to sit in office for decades like a lot in Congress already do. It can’t be any worse.
Cue the Chung Chung sound.
Those Criminals that the Working Family Party will not make you hire, will now be housed in your neighborhood to kill you.
I bet this had something to do with the decison.
"According to some reports, 95 percent of the youth in New York City jails are black or Latino."
The 146-page report suggests:
Putting half of Rikers inmates back on the streets through bail reforms, an expansion of the citys supervised release program and other measures.
Building a new jail in each of the citys five boroughs at an estimated cost of $10.6 billion. Existing facilities in Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx would be replaced with new jails built on city-owned land in Queens and Staten Island.
Slashing the number of city correction officers by almost two thirds, from 10,500 to 3,700. The number of civilian employees would remain stable to promote positive, pro-social programming for those incarcerated.
Potentially redeveloping Rikers with a third runway for La Guardia Airport, an energy-from-waste facility, a sewage-treatment plant and a large-scale solar energy installation.
Welcome back to the 1990s NYC. New jails in all the boroughs, 90 new homeless shelters scattered around the city, film crews making noises like firecrackers on a West Side street from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. next week . . . At least Bloomberg hated noise, his only redeeming feature besides nice plantings.
Don’t worry. They have all the required permits from the Mayor’s Office on Film. Oh and here’s the phone number if your car gets towed. We didn’t think the Citi bike rack was making it difficult enough to park your car.
