I just trade in cars nowadays. I buy them new, and trade them in, usually for about $500, because I ride ‘em hard and put ‘em away wet (VERY high mileage and almost certainly in need of major repairs).
I hate selling used cars to private parties.
I never minded it in the past, but in the last few years, Albuquerque has become the stolen car capital of the U.S. (highest auto theft rate in the country). So, the odds are pretty good that one may be targeted when meeting private parties.
With one exception, I've always met in a public place that I know has cameras (Walmart parking lot). I have a 20-year-old CR-V that will likely best be sold on the private market, rather than traded in, but I'm getting more and more wary about crime here. I don't live in Albuquerque proper, but I do live close enough to it, that we get a good bunch of their criminals coming here, too. Plus, we have our own locals to deal with.
