By positing the possibility of driving north, I would be gambling that “they” keep the main thoroughfares in some kind of working order since it would be a relatively straightforward source of revenue for locals.

sure, but it will be worse in the US than in some other countries due to the higher degree of multi-phucking-culturalism than in some other countries. see the difference now.
at least here i have a mutual support base with people i would die for and would die for me, anyplace else, not so much
