I don’t watch TMZ much but every time I have they seem NOT TO go out of their way to do “gotcha” interviews

They meet someone apparently at random coming into or out of an airport and they always seem to ask polite questions - or at least question them politely.

they do seem to be polite ..for reporters.

I agree. I think TMZ has reporters who report on what’s happening. It’s pretty straightforward: “Here’s a report on what’s happening!”

The NYT, Washington Post, Boston Globe, MSNBC, CNN, etc. just take a different approach to reporting: “Here’s what you should think about stuff!”

I agree -- TMZ is basically feeding the audience for the fans of celebrities, so they mainly like to get on the spot positive interviews. They will dig superficially into gossip stories, but not as serious investigators. The owner of TMZ, Harvey Levin, is a straight-appearing gay Hollywood attorney who has been acquainted with Trump for some time, and did a favorable interview of him in Trump Tower after the election that was shown on FoxNews.
