The upper house of parliament has rejected the idea of a nationwide ban on the Islamic face veil and other face coverings.
The draft bill, which was narrowly passed by the lower house last September, was opposed by the senate after a debate on Thursday, reported news agencies.
The proposal by hardline Swiss Peoples Party (SVP) MP Walter Wobmann called for a federal ban on the burqa, niqab and other full face coverings in public, along the same lines as a cantonal ban that came into effect in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino in July last year.

Wonder if some of these people in the senate will have a shocked look on their face right before they are beheaded by sharia?
I was hoping Switzerland would have the sense that the other western Europeans don’t have.
Looks like they are submitting.
Women voting rights in Switzerland were accepted only in the middle of the 20th century.
Has not been enough Swiss banks robbed with people wearing burkas to warrant this. Is what happened in France to cause them to pass such a ban.
