US starts fast vs. Canada to book Round 2 ticket
MLB.com/World Baseball Classic ^ | March 12, 2017 | Matt Kelly

Throw out all the tiebreaker scenarios. Team USA is moving on.

The Americans' mission was clear after the Dominican Republic outlasted Colombia, 9-3, in extra innings: Win and get in to Round 2 of the World Baseball Classic. A focused Team USA squad did just that by defeating Team Canada, 8-0, on Sunday at Marlins Park in Miami to punch its ticket to the second round in San Diego. The victory left the Americans with a 2-1 record in Pool C, good enough to claim a Pool F matchup against the Pool D runner-up Wednesday at 9 pm. ET (6 PT) at Petco Park.

The U.S. got to business straight away, scoring three runs in the first and tacking on four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Nolan Arenado delivered the big blow with a three-run homer in the second, and Buster Posey also homered as part of a three-RBI day.

That was more than enough offense for U.S. starter Danny Duffy, who struck out seven over four dominant, scoreless innings. U.S. pitchers dominated overall from the first pitch to the last Sunday, striking out 15 batters to tie the single-game tournament record. That total had only been accomplished twice before, by Mexico in 2006 and Japan in 2013.

The loss left Canada winless in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, meaning it will need to qualify the next time the tournament is held. The Canadians have yet to advance to the second round of the Classic in four attempts.

Danny Duffy was excellent, teh bullpen held this time, and the bats were alive. Nolan Arenado broke out of his funk. USA 8, Canada 0.

On to San Diego!

The Dominican Republic-Colombia game was a great game, a classic. But wasn’t the final score 10-3? USA has its work cut out for itself in round two.

Yes, the Dominicans scored 7 runs in the 11th inning, after a Colombian runner was thrown out at the plate on a GREAT throw by Bautista.

All the Colombians thought he was safe. if he had been called safe, Colombia would vhe won the game 4-3. They came within 2 total runs of going 3-0. Instead, they’re eliminated.

No joke. The World Baseball Classic is a real baseball tournament.

It doesn’t seem to get a lot of media coverage. And I’ve heard many major league players don’t participate due to fear of injury, and how the games cut out a lot of their normal spring training time.

No, it's no joke. Comes around every 4 years and screws with Spring Training.

Team USA pitching was up to professional standards. Team Canada appeared to be pulling pitchers out of retirement. How’s that work?

It’s a desperate attempt by the MLB to create an international competition during the pre-season. Not really sure what they were trying to achieve, but it’s largely pointless and nobody pays much attention.

Canada put an awful team on the field. Aging Mendoza Line hitters like Pete Orr and George Kottaras. Apparently none of their really good players wanted to take part in this.

The WBC is covered pretty thoroughly by the usual baseball press; Baseball America, Sporting News, etc.

It’s a big deal in Latin American countries.

The WBC was set up by MLB and the MLB Players Association, so a certain number of MLB players are always going to be available to play in it. Current and former MLB players visit countries around the world promoting baseball with coaching clinics and public appearances.

I doubt anyone makes big money. Probably it’s an overall loss, but it’s really a public relations expense by MLB.

That makes sense. I wouldn’t pay a penny to see it. Ill bet, in my state, we have high school teams that would sweep that thing.

Not likely a high school team could compete! Or a college team.

Plenty of major leaguers: Freddie Freeman, Russell Martin, Jose Quintana, Adrian Beltre, Jose Bautista, and many others. And many of the unknowns on the WBC teams are not completely overmatched by the MLB stars.

I see. I figured Jose and Pablo from the Dominican . Ill check it out. Love baseball. Coached kids 12 years. Amazing game but so damned slow. I watch on DVR at speed level 2 — it is still slow.

Check out the Puerto Rico team.

Javvy Baez (Cubs)
Carlos Beltran (Astros)
Giovanni Soto (White Sox)
Rene Rivera (Mets)
Yadier Molina (Cardinals)
Francisco Lindor (Indians)

They can do a whole lineup with players that have MLB experience.
