Store owner said city advised him to shut the store down until official July start date. Someone was unhappy, however. That would be Minneapolis licensing manager Grant Wilson, who phoned Surdyk before noon Sunday to advise him to lock up the store or be in violation of state law.
"Why send our tax to money to Wisconsin, when we can do the business ourselves?"
"My father was the first one to discount liquor way back in the 1960s, and he didn't wait till July to do it," Surdyk said.

“Liquor story?”
From comments
“If the liquor inspector were to strictly apply the fine scheme described in the article, after 324 illegal sales (surely accomplished today), Surdyk’s fine would exceed one googol dollars. Yes, that a number with 100 zeroes after it!”
Title misprint by the Star and Sickle.
Liquor story?
How about this one?
JOHNNY WALKER was hunting with
MARTINI & ROSSI when he met
HIRAM WALKER coming down
COBBA CREEK with
QUEEN ANNE who lived on the
CUTTY SARK up in
HUDSON’S BAY near the
GREEN RIVER.
At one time, in my neck of the woods it was illegal to even mow your lawn on Sundays. A liquor store open on Sundays would have been inconceivable.
It’s my understanding that JOHNNY WALKER belonged to a sportsman’s association. I believe it was the CANADIAN CLUB.
Now that’s o great story. 8>)
They were hunting Wild Turkey on the Old Charter ranch.
Stupid headline writer must have been drinking
Sunday laws existed all over the place..it was considered a day of rest
Just changed blue laws with Sharia laws. No problem as respect of a religion is revered and accommodated by society.
Too bad Carrie Nation isn’t still with us as MN liquor regulators could send her in to enforce their Prohibition using her hatchet to chop up the offending store.

Oh my!
Is it just me or do I see a vague resemblance to Barney Frank here? Yikes!
