I kind of grew up on "Rambling With Gambling." I once saw John R. Gambling and his son John A. Gambling in the front room of a restaurant. Said hello as I went by. They seemed nice.
Yes, that’s right. I worked there for two years in the mid or late 70s. I never saw or met John Gambling but grew up listening to him. I was hired by Denise Richardson who went on to work in local NYC broadcasting. Nice lady (lesbian!)
My friend, Laurie, was the producer of Bernard Meltzer’s Self Help program. When she ran out of callers, she would call me up to imitate people with problems. (I’m not kidding!) She loathed Dr. Meltzer, lol.
I still have nightmares thinking about Gambling playing “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag” at 6:30am in the morning when I was getting ready for Catholic School. Shudder...
That was pretty much his theme song.
And every morning, he’d have his audience “march around the breakfast table.” (i.e., play a march.)
Peter Roberts was a funny man.
Goodness, Peter Roberts! What a memory you have.
He would always not the day the buzzards return to Hinckley, Ohio.
They also made jokes about grackles. Not exactly today’s shock jocks, were they?
“After all is done and serd,
The grackle is a noble bird.” — Peter Roberts
