Always liked the actual sparring in TKD, both full and half speed. Forms for structure and practice and freestyle of the forms in action.
How I looked at it anyway.

Our class is heavily weighted to self-defense and avoiding violence when possible. As our instructor says, practice "Nike-do" if you can!
We do sparring in our class, and it often starts off with us just kindof looking at each other, until somebody decides to make a move! Always good for a few laughs. But then we start to get into it, and man not only is it a lot of fun but it is so totally unlike the politeness on the mat. Very eye-opening.
When I get to class a little early though, and am watching the TKD kids sparring, I often wonder why one of them doesn't just take the kick and trap the leg. But I gather that TKD has these things called "rules." I am not familiar with that concept!
Just kidding! I wouldn't mess with some of those young people for any amount of money. They are all smiley and polite and you think you are safe from eight feet away. Think again!
