Yes, MMA has the three basis: fight standing up with kicks and punches (mui thai), use Judo to take down to the floor to get in position to stomp, or, if on the ground, grappling JuJitsu.

It has to be a martial Science with an offensive mindset.

Alternatively Krav Maga incorporates MMA and practical situational awareness to grab rocks, tools, pencils, whatever you have to fight with to survive.

Yes, Tai Chimwas forbidden for centuries. Similarly Ju Jitsu was not supposed to get out of Japan as it was considered a military secret up until the 70s or 80s when the master went to teach it in Brazile.

Our class is heavily weighted to self-defense and avoiding violence when possible. As our instructor says, practice "Nike-do" if you can!

We do sparring in our class, and it often starts off with us just kindof looking at each other, until somebody decides to make a move! Always good for a few laughs. But then we start to get into it, and man not only is it a lot of fun but it is so totally unlike the politeness on the mat. Very eye-opening.

When I get to class a little early though, and am watching the TKD kids sparring, I often wonder why one of them doesn't just take the kick and trap the leg. But I gather that TKD has these things called "rules." I am not familiar with that concept!

Just kidding! I wouldn't mess with some of those young people for any amount of money. They are all smiley and polite and you think you are safe from eight feet away. Think again!

Any martial art where the boy learns a style and actually spars with an opponent.
Boxers, used to being thrown at and throwing back can dismantle larger opponents on the street without a lot of rigidly tecnical “moves”.

Wrestling and grappling are not so good against a long range fighter like a good boxer. Get them in close, then, OK.

Not much good if you have been knocked off your feet.

Regardless of what martial art you choose, choose a school or dojo where the trophies are NOT up front in the main area. Find one where the trophies are in the back or a closet and covered with dust. That means their focus is on life skills and not just self defense.

IMHO

I have noticed at some local TKD competitions that the kids are using what I call Hong Kong school karate. Very showy and intimidating to some but easily beat because of instability in their movements and in their stances. Judo fodder.

If he can join the wrestling team, he should learn a few useful holds pretty quickly...and build a support group among his teammates.

Could not agree more.

If your child is in a school or other situation where he needs to physically defend himself from bullying then he either should move to a new school, or be home schooled, or you need to get in action and ensure that the problem is stopped by the school.

In the educational system today the bully can take advantage of the "zero violence" policy and use it to wreak havoc on the kid who tries to defend himself. Put more bluntly, the bully will start the fight, your kid will defend himself, the bully will say he or she was assaulted, and your kid will end up getting arrested or seriously disciplined.

It's not fair, but its a reality of the modern educational system.

Krav Maga - it’s practical/doable self defense. My husband has been doing it for 7 yrs and is working on his brown belt. Not bad for someone who will be 60 this summer. He started doing it with both our boys when they were teenagers and continued after the kids got busy with other stuff.

Don’t make it too complicated. Our daughter had a school bus stop harasser problem in middle school. We advised her kick the little bastard in the nuts. She only had to do it once. Problem solved.

Judo but more importantly, remove him from that environment. Judo is such a fantastic martial art. It has a deep understanding of human mentality and physiology. Does not primarily focus on punching and kicking, mostly throwing and grappling.

Kung Fu for weapons, Aikido for broken bones, ripped muscles and torn ligaments, Judo for countering and throws, Jiu-Jitsu for submissions...

Very good assessment.

I would only add that Aikido, offensively very damaging as you suggest, is probably also the best defensive art.

Kali. It can be learned very quickly. And it is brutally effective.
