Dunno. The teacher has to KNOW more than the pupil, but need not necessarily be smarter.
In the same vein, the teacher MUST always speak and write Standard Grammatical English, so that the students pick up correct usage by hearing it all day. Teachers who do not speak correct English will cripple their students.
