A leaked picture of two fearsome Chinese tanks has sparked speculation that China is developing new military vehicles.

State media China.com reported that the vehicle at the front is thought to be the new heavy infantry tank while the yellow vehicle could be the second-generation paratrooper fighting vehicle.

The news came after tension had risen between China and the United States over the issues on the sovereignty of Taiwan and the control of the South China Sea.

Count on the Daily Mail to misidentify Infantry Fighting Vehicles as tanks. But the new IFV seems to have a large caliber gun for the class.

Evidently, the Chinese don’t intend to go hull down.

Soviet vehicles were notorious for their inability to go hull down although that was keeping with the doctrine of attack, attack, and more attack.

Was really hoping to see some authentically monstrous tanks.

These are two slab-sided APCs, not even field-prepped.

Would it kill the Chinese to develop an Ogre Mk IV?

Hull down implies defense and that’s not in the plan. It’s the same issue that cost Hitler an Army at Stalingrad

The vehicle in the front looks to me to actually be a self-propelled artillery piece ... doesn’t it? The turret is awfully far to the rear of the vehicle to be a tank ... not much ability to sit at the military crest and fire downhill, is there?

The tan one looks like an IFV, the green one like some kind of SP gun.

Yep.

The placement of the turret speaks volumes about their strategy.

They are building them to take ground, not hold ground.

Yup. Aircraft like the A10 Warthog basically created a flying tank, obsoleting the traditional ground crawling tank.

Lighter, faster, succeeds over bigger, slower.

These represent a threat to....Russia, and maybe India. It’ll be interesting to see how Mr. Putin responds.

Their little excursion into Vietnam in 1979 should have taught them that plans don’t always go according to plan. China’s military has no recent combat experience. That experience is crucial in deciding if you are going in the right direction.
