Meryl Streep is defending herself after Chanel’s designer Karl Lagerfeld claimed that she dropped out of wearing a Chanel dress to this year’s Oscars in favor of a brand that would pay her.
“In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication,” Streep said in a statement to PEOPLE. “That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience.
“I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting,” she said.

Earlier this week, Lagerfeld told WWD that Streep eschewed a Chanel dress for Sunday’s award show in favor of a designer who would allegedly pay her.
“I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress,” Lagerfeld told WWD. He claimed that shortly after production started on the gown, Streep’s camp reportedly canceled in favor of a label that offered a pay out. “‘Don’t continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us,’ ” Lagerfeld claimed the actress’s team told him.

That’s right Meryl, he “defamed” you. Throw your tantrum. Threaten to sue. Then grow up. Its embarrassing that an almost 70 year old woman is acting this way.
Fake dress vs money dress?
“Merry” Meryl stepped on the wrong designer toes this time.
Karl Lagerfeld is a proud businessman, and he is not going to let this go. He’s already as rich if not richer than she is, thus has little to lose from the free publicity. Just because he’s old and sickly, doesn’t mean he becomes another willing doormat for Meryl and her out of control ego. Some older people will clamp onto a vendetta and never let go, holding on tighter than a gator holds a new catch.
She is due for her comeuppence. Such a reckoning probably won’t come from Donald, he’s kinda busy right now, making him appear to be a safe target for her verbal abuse.
Meryl is a star. Among her credits are many Charlie Chaplin movies. In her seventies Ms. Streep successfully transitioned to talkies.

So, she’s lost so much of her fan base she’s shopping to get paid to wear a dress. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving whiny hateful old biddy.
Hated her since Kramer vs Kramer. Don't care how many experts say she is great. I see a fake accent, posturing, scenery chewing fraud.
“Swordnose” Streep thinks she is Queen of Hollywood, arrogant Aryan that she is.
