A married Brooklyn teacher who pestered his students for dates with their hot relatives can return to the classroom thanks to an appeals court but he still isnt satisfied.
PS/MS 282 gym instructor Terrell Williams was initially booted by the city Education Department in 2013. But he won a new hearing because a judicial panel said last September that he did not violate any specific rule or regulation by using his classes as his own personal Tinder.
He was given a less harsh punishment earlier this month a 3.5 year unpaid suspension.
But Williams is now back in Manhattan Supreme Court arguing that even that punishment is harsh and overly draconian.
He is pushing for an immediate return to work or at most a one-year suspension.
He also wants a new arbitrator, claiming the one who handed down the two prior penalties is unfair.
In her Feb. 10, decision, arbitrator Lisa Brogan reiterated that Williams behavior at the Park Slope school was unacceptable.
By any measure [Williams] inquiries to his students about their older sisters, his collection of photographs of those older students female relatives and his use of his students to help him connect with these women is repugnant, (snip)
Brogan said Williams never took responsibility for his behavior, blamed his students and said he did not believe that teachers were role models.
The DOE had sought a five-year suspension, citing two cases upheld by the courts where misbehaving teachers had received similar punishments.
But Williams insists theres no credible evidence he ever tried to contact his students relatives.
The teacher, who earns $80,000 a year, had been originally ousted for routinely asking female students whether they had older sisters, how old they were, what they looked like, and whether he could have their phone number, the DOE said.
