I used to love watching this guy as a kid. The rumor was that he was a college professor who put on this “animal” act. One time I saw him, he had brass knuckles and smacked his opponent in the ring. The crowd went wild and screamed at the ref to make him forfeit the match. The ref went over and Steele held the brass knuckles behind his back. The ref said “Let me see your hand” and Steele put his one hand out. Then the ref said “let me see your other hand” and Steele put the brass knuckles in his first hand (behind his back) and put the other hand out. The ref, satisfied that he had seen both of Steele’s hands, let the match go on. The crowd went wild. It was classic 1980s professional wrestling.
A devout Christian. He’s chewing up turnbuckles in Heaven!
God Bless George the Animal Steele and his family! He was one of my favorites to watch and brought many laughs to me during George’s Wrestling Career.
Early on before he adopted the moniker “The Animal”, he was known as the “Detroit Destroyer”.
Just a little trivia for you folks...
CA....
I loved this guy, he was great. Especially loved when he carried around his stuff animal in the ring, “Mine.” He was also great playing the legendary Tor Johnson in “Ed Wood.”
RIP.
