When Becky Albertalli published her first young adult novel, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, with the HarperCollins imprint Balzer and Bray in 2015, she never expected it to be controversial. Shed worked for years as a clinical psychologist specializing in gender nonconforming children and LGBTQ teens and adults.* Yet her bookabout a closeted gay kid whose love notes to a classmate fall into the wrong handscontained a moment that rubbed readers the wrong way: Simon, the sweet but clueless protagonist, muses that girls have an easier time coming out than boys, because their lesbianism strikes others as alluring. At a book signing, several people approached Albertalli to complain that the scene played too readily into a narrative theyd heard many times before. Online, commenters condemned the fetishization of queer girls in the book as offensive. Albertalli hadnt originally given the passage a second thought: the character was obviously unworldly; elsewhere, he asserts that all Jews come from Israel. But in the latter exchange, readers pointed out, Simons Jewish friend immediately corrects him. The lesbian line, a snippet from the narrators interior monologue, receives no such rebuttal.

I know someone who has applied for a job on a county road crew and has had 4 interviews over the course of nearly 4 months and all the interviews have been about diversity and sharing time with others on the equipment even if they aren’t very good at its operation.
Most homosexuals were sexually abused as children.
They want to normalize their behavior to attain better access to YOUR children!
We’re becoming muslims, where everything but the Koran (and addenda) offend. Well on our way to becoming a nation of ignoramuses.
Being an author is brutal business. Not sure what makes her special. I wrote a series of books about zombies, and one of my main characters is an old school centenarian (you know the kind, goes to church every morning, husband died decades ago, doesn’t cuss) who prays from time to time as the world is falling apart around her. I got hate mail saying I was a bible-thumper trying to infuse my religion into my readers. Even though I was judicious that her prayers fit the scene (ie, though I walk in the shadow of the valley of death).
My point is that you can find people upset at literally everything in a book (another complaint against my book is it doesn’t have enough cussing!) and they picked this particular book because of the agenda behind it.
I’ve been thinking about writing a book with the bad guy being gay. I could probably gin up some publicity by doing that LOL.
And yet the dehumanizing book Fifty Shades is given accolades
People are sick
LOL. I, personally, would see no problem with being a "bible-thumper trying to infuse my religion into my readers."
George Orwell is spinning in his grave.........
Anti-intellectual lefties fail to understand that in fiction, well rounded characters sometimes have ... gasp! ... flaws. They aren’t perfectly knowledgeable, unbiased, uber-PC, exceptional at every skill and get along perfectly with everyone else (except on Star Trek The Next Generation, which is why it was boring).
And in other novels, characters are murdered and the murderer doesn’t get caught!
My daughter is trying to become an editor. Taking classes now. She’s too clinical and uncaring about the sensitivity of the readers.
Your books aren’t my thing cause I’m not a zombie guy, but I appreciate books that aren’t full of too much garbage and vulgarity.
When I finish a book, I think “Can I recommend this to my teenage son?
I know. Senate confirmation takes less time and has fewer diversity questions.
It's 37 seconds long, including the credits.
"It is just as big a thing to take offense as it is to give it."

He just nailed it in such a chillingly perfect way. It’s a nightmare book for the ages & you are correct they don’t see what they are doing.
I look at reading which I so thoroughly enjoy the same way I do TV & movies.....if it offends me or I don’t like it I stop reading or watching.
They might as well advertise the job for a “sensitivity reader” as a soul sucker. Because that’s what they will do to a book.
“Becky Albertalli ... worked for years as a clinical psychologist specializing in gender nonconforming children and LGBTQ teens and adults.”
Can you imagine what an absolute fruitcake this idiot is?
Yep.
"Professor Promotes Queer Christ Concept To Students"
Rev. Patrick Cheng, a professor at the Episcopal Divinity School in Massachusetts, told the students that Jesus was a subversive person and Gods way of queering the world, so to speak.
Cheng said Christ was always coming out in the gospels and that Christ is God coming out.
At its heart, Christianity is queer,
It's sure workin' on that.
