The Army today confirmed the caliber for its new Modular Handgun System will be 9mm, one week after the service announced it selected a version of Sig Sauer’s P320 to replace the M9 service pistol.

Army officials sent out a press release with additional details on the MHS but did not explain why the service chose 9mm, a decision that Military.com asked the Army to explain its reasoning behind.

Sticking the 9 MM Parabellum. So much for the hope of going back to .45 ACP.

Those are the only two calibers I reload any more. Technology has come a long way in the last decade making the 9 much more effective in stopping bad guys. On the other hand, there's nothing like shooting steel with a 1911, and the cartridge gives you bragging rights. 😁

Maybe Luger won a bet in the afterlife with Browning.

The 9mm Luger is a great cartridge. It packs similar energy to larger calibers in a case which allows for high capacity mags.

Within reason, it is energy which makes a cartridge effective.

Could it be that the 9mm has proven it self as a viable pistol caliber longer then the .45acp.

From what i’m picking up its modular which means you can convert calibers. There was some very good videos on youtube.

The ballistics of the 5.7x28mm are pretty superior.

"the MHS but did not explain why the service chose 9mm, a decision that Military.com asked the Army to explain its reasoning behind."

The FBI released a years long comprehensive study of the effectiveness of various calibers of semi-auto handguns and their use in the field. The result was the FBI going back to the 9mm from the 40. I imagine this study has a lot to do with it.

The external ballistics maybe, but the INTERNAL ballistics are akin to an ice pick.

They did test the MHS pistols with hollow point ammo. Using HP ammunition will make the 9mm work a lot better than the FMJ used now.

“hollow point ammo”

Isn’t that against the rules of war.

.40 S&W, .357 Sig, .38 super and 10 mm would be much better choices than 9mm.

I personally carry a light.380 as I’m old and tired of carrying anything heavy. But I’m not the US Military. Young soldiers should be able to carry and handle a .45ACP or any of the other choices I mentioned.
At the range I often shoot .44 Magnums and ‘Ruger loaded’ .45 Colt revolvers. 9mm is like .22lr compared to those (recoil wise ).

Let’s split the difference on capacity and power.

.40 S&W

We are not signatories to the Hague Convention. The military has already announced there are going to field HP ammo.

The .40 was really hot during the mid to late 90s. The bloom seems to be off now.

I have noticed when CDNN lists pistols for sale, .40 caliber seems to be $10-20 less than the same gun in 9mm. It is actually a perfectly good cartridge and I might would take advantage of the savings if I had the money to buy one now.

Girls and girly-men are less afraid to shoot 9mm than major calibers.

B/c the fbi went from 9mm, to 10mm, to 40cal.

Most other police depts followed.

.
>> “compared to those (recoil wise )” <<

Which is probably the whole point.

The 9mm luger cartridge is a superior balance between power and ultimate target hits.
