As a self-described product of pop culture, former first lady Michelle Obama once said during an August 2016 interview with Variety that she was inspired by Mary Tyler Moore, who passed away at the age of 80 on Wednesday, January 25.
The child obesity and female education activist and not to mention first-ever black first lady said it was Moores single, hardworking character Mary Richards on The Mary Tyler Moore Show who caught her eye at the age of 10 when she would watch TV with her family while eating dessert.
She was one of the few single working women depicted on television at the time, Obama told Variety while talking about Tyler Moores beloved stereotype-crushing '70s sitcom. She wasnt married. She wasnt looking to get married. At no point did the series end in a happy ending with her finding a husband which seemed to be the course you had to take as a woman. But she sort of bucked that. She worked in a newsroom, she had a tough boss and she stood up to him. She had close friends, never bemoaning the fact that she was single. She was very proud and comfortable in that role. I was probably 10 or 11 when I saw that, and sort of started thinking, You know what? Marriage is an option. Having a family is an option. And going to school and getting your education and building your career is another really viable option that can lead to happiness and fulfillment. (snip)
Tyler Moore, who, like Obama, was an activist throughout her life...
May I be the first to call bulls..t.
That woman is a lying black Hillary.
Hell, Mooch hated America until her husband won. This BS never ends. I think we should have an Obama blackout...oops, am I allowed to say that?
Not Julia?
Someone better clue the Mooch....MTM refused to join the feminazi movement.
She liked the wookie episodes...
What a load...she’s too young to have watched except maybe reruns and I truly doubt that
Sure. MO and MTM, it’s like they were separated at birth.
How old is MO?
I grew up watching the Dick van Dyke Show. I so admired Laura Petrie when I was a little girl. I had my mom take me to the salon to get my hair done just like hers when I was about seven.
Great catch! Julia was a successful 70’s show. So was MO dreaming in the 1970’s of being a white career girl, not a black one?
The Lost Wookie Episodes. (71-72 ABC)......
SMH. These people in the Media need mental professionals. Lol.
Yep. NEVER heard her mention her. EVER. Probably because she was WHITE.
Mooch disses Corey.
What next?? She watched The Brady Bunch every Friday night?
Same thing.
Let me guess, next fall Mary Tyler Moore is getting a reboot and Mary will now be played by Michelle Obama M.M.M.
One day at a time is now hispanic on netflix
Trying to stay relevant and trying to hitch her wagon to a wonderful woman who was loved.
Sorry Sasquatch. Won’t work.
You had 8 years and blew it.
Remember when you ditched the black girls you were mentoring because ‘you were too busy’?
Well, we do.
Oprah had a strong connection and influence from the show..she loved mtm.
But moochie??? Dont believe it
MTM threw her hat in the air, and then she DIED!
Do that Moochelle, and you too will be an icon.
She is trying to copy oprah. Mtm surprised oprah during some occasion early on and oprah was beside herself. Mtm was a role model for oprah. I saw the clip yesterday.
