It is a question that for centuries dog lovers and cat lovers have fought over like, well, cats and dogs: which animal is more intelligent?
Now scientists in Japan appear finally to have settled the matter by proving cats are just as good as their canine counterparts at various memory tests, suggesting they could be equally clever.

My cat died in my arm after I tried to feed her to stay alive.
She remembered her dependency on me. So cats are not as aloof as people assume.
"....if he's that smart he'll find the turd we hid under his dish yesterday"
Either way, them’s fightin’ words!
Let the games begin, all you dog and cat lovers and haters out there.
I have no dog (nor cat) in this fight, so leave me out of it...
LOL...I remember that one
I’ve never doubted the intelligence and cleverness of cats in comparison to dogs. It’s just that they’re far more contrary, that is when they’re engaged with humans at all. I’d hate to think of the fatalities, if domestic cats were as large as some dogs are.
Cat lovers, retract your claws, I don’t hate cats, by the way. I’ve even loved and mourned a few, none of them my own though.
Dogs and cats may be equally intelligent, but they still shouldn’t live together.
I doubt it...
Dog is a social critter, cat is solitary. It's not so much a matter of intelligence, rather it's about their approach to problems and the problems they've been equipped and bred to solve.
You can pose a problem to one of each and the dog says "Please let me at it! I've GOT this!" and the cat is asking you, "Why should I?"
A different problem, dog says "You want me to what?" and by the time you turn to the cat, cat says, "It's done." (And anyway, to a cat, solving problems is YOUR job.)
What's fascinating about this difference is the concept of guilt. Social dogs have it, cats admit nothing. You can't prove it, they walk.
That’s just the weirdest video, the dog doesn’t appear agitated at all, almost as if it thinks it’s playing, even after the cat launches into it. I don’t know what was behind that behavior but it doesn’t need to ever be around people at all, let alone children. I assume it was put down.
Exactly. And I always thought the common view was that cats are more intelligent. These people are equating emotional willingness to obey their master with intelligence. Exactly how the liberals judge people.
Cats are still aloof, toxoplasmosis spreading a-holes. So there’s that.
I don’t know if the dog was put down but I think the cat got the deluxe salmon plate for dinner that night. ;o)
I have one of each, and I agree.
Both are very intelligent, though you observe them applying that in different ways.
My sixteen year old cat has gone blind and really going downhill. The vet says he is free of disease and is just old. He will not leave me alone! He follows me everywhere. He has always been a wonderful companion and I will miss him when he is gone. He helped me post this.
Yep. Good kitty.
Have you read “the cat diary”? It’s hilarious.
“Fud” is a long-term favorite around my house.
