Trump's victory creates uncertainty for wind and solar power

President Donald Trump has disputed climate change, pledged a revival of coal and disparaged wind power, and his nominee to head the Energy Department was once highly skeptical of the agency’s value. What this means for states’ efforts to promote renewable energy is an open question.

States that are pushing for greater reliance on wind and solar power are not quite sure what to expect as Trump takes over. Many of them depend heavily on federal renewable-energy tax credits, grants and research, much of which comes from the Energy Department.

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s pick to lead the department, presents a contradictory figure: A Texas oil promoter, he also oversaw a huge expansion of wind-energy production while governor. When he ran for president in 2011, he included Energy on a list of departments he thought should be abolished, though he disavowed the idea Thursday at his Senate confirmation hearing.

“We don’t know what version of Perry is going to show up,” said Michael Webber, deputy director of the Energy Institute at the University of Texas, Austin. …

When Texas keeps discovering billions of barrels of fossil fuels to last hundreds of years, those subsidies ought to be GONE. If the wind and solar generators can make it on their own, fine, but no more handouts.

If there were any certainty to wind and solar power in the first place, government involvement would be irrelevant.

It’s past time to stop making us pay for killing millions of eagles and other birds. And stop preventing us from filling in puddles in our driveways because it might inconvenience a frog.

Exactly. If wind and solar could benefit the country, they would be in the forefront. If anyone could invent a solar cell that was more efficient, they would be powering everything.

Why?

Either it works or it doesn’t. Trump has no control over that.

If states want to promote wind and solar, they can do so however don’t use my tax dollars. Neither wind nor solar can return their investment in dollars to reduce energy requirements.

Let me put it in my usual verbiage.

#### solar and wind power.

If it was so great, billions would have been invested by Silicon Valley and others already.

That didn’t happen.

Solar and wind are viable for a number of niche applications but these huge subsidized arrays should never have been approved.

Wind and solar energy are not cost effective but the money spent on them are offerings to the god giah the environmentalists god.

I’m all for renewable energy...

I just don’t want to subsidizing it with tax dollars...

If it is a viable energy source, it will stand on it own with capital investment...

I saw where Wyoming recently passed a law that prevents the use of any renewable energy wind solar etc by utility companies. While you can argue the viability of renewable sources that doesn’t sound very free market to me.

BINGO...”uncertainty” = shutting off the government subsidy pipeline. It’s WAY past due to have these things sink or swim on their own economic merits. Plus end all the ways the government has turned a blind eye to the wildlife destruction by windmills, the destruction of our nation’s once-beautiful vistas, and the consumption of rare earth metals mined in China where there are no environmental protections. Those monstrosities should be made to bear all their “externality” costs.

It doesn’t change anything unless wind and solar energy can’t compete in a free market.
