The city will remove unpopular portions of the its infamous Specialized High Schools entrance exam starting this fall, Education Department officials said Wednesday.
The test, which is used to admit students to the city's eight Specialized High Schools, including Brooklyn Technical High School and Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, has remained unchanged for two decades, even though it is disliked by many.
Just 4% of offers at the elite schools went to black students and 6% to Hispanic kids, even though they account for about 70% of the overall student body.
"Changes to the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test make it fairer and more equitable for our students by better reflecting what they actually learn in class," said Education Department spokesman Will Mantell. "Now our focus is on getting practice items to schools, students and community organizations in every neighborhood across the city."
The changes revealed Wednesday will remove certain portions of the test that were based on scrambled paragraphs which were not commonly taught in city school classes and typically only taught by private tutors.
It's a mystery as to why that is too, huh? Racism, right?
So much for New York’s elite schools. They will quickly become not different from the rest.
These schools were where smart working class kids could get an education equal to what elite private schools deliver.
The wealthy elites hate the competition.
Leftards truly are the enemies of civilization.
They will destroy standards anywhere and everywhere they can.
Right. And then ALL of the NYC public schools will be disgusting cesspools staffed by brand new inexperienced teachers who will not get tenure and therefore will leave for the suburbs where they have a far better class of student and a higher salary. There has been a concerted campaign going on to harass veteran teachers out the door to retirement or termination with the higher salaries, tenure, AND an institutional memory of what teaching is SUPPOSED to be like--without the Commie Core, without the 60 item punch list supposedly used to evaluate teachers but actually used as a political and punitive weapon, where there were actual consequences for student misbehaviors instead of the teacher being fired for disciplining a student, etc.
Veteran teachers are counting the days until they can retire and get away from the absolute libtard wet dream of madness passing for education nowadays in NYC. It's a politically driven fraud perpetuated on the public, with fake graduation rates of students who then have to take multiple years of non credit remedial courses in college---where they didn't belong in the first place. But all hail DeDumDum, the great leader and the corrupt piece of garbage.
The parts taken out are NOT "only taught by tutors"; they, as with the rest of the test, are just normal/usual subject matter and I should know, having taken that exam, though many long years ago.
This is to RUIN these "specialized" school, many more of which used to exist in NYC and were as good as, if not better than many of the elite private schools!
Noooooooooooo...the damned RACE BAITERS and SJWs HATE these schools; NOT the wealthy !
SPOT ON !
Sad, but not a catastrophe.
Because of the Internet, educational videos, and interactive software, motivated students can gain expert knowledge about almost any subject.
Once they learn how to create a profitable business, they will never look back.
One of my five children decided that since he wanted to get a career in a STEM field, he needed to go to a “International Baccalaureate World School” near us. Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge.
Two years in, he quit and took the GED and is working to pay his way through the college of his choice.
He complained that it was the most filthy, nerve wracking way to get an education. The only students learning anything were the ones sitting in the front row, all the rest were sitting in the back; talking, laughing, texting, cursing, etc. If you dared ask them to be quiet so you could hear the teacher, they would threaten physical violence and try to get you after the class.
The rest of my children took the hint, have stayed home-schooled, got excellent scores on their GED and are earning their own way through the college or institute of learning of their own choice.
All in the name of “diversity”, then the left want to brag about how “educated” they are when the reality is MOST of the people coming out of college would have never been able to get into a University or an elite school decades ago due to their real ability. Everything now has been lowered for certain people.
From the new test:
Mary has eight apples, Peter has five apples, and Tyrone has four apples.
QUESTION: From whom did Tyrone steal his apples?
dumbing down...
dumbing down...
Dumbing it down so as to fit in more of the bell curve.
Petah ,cause he’s a dirty capitalist who tried to profit on his apples for sale ...
Yes, this is sad. My child is a product of the specialized High School’s and is doing very well. I am very familiar with these programs and I can tell you they may as well close the schools if they do this.
There are various Honors programs throughout the NYC public school system. Some of my kids school mates from Junior High didn’t score high enough in this test to make the specialized schools and ended up in them instead. I had 4 years to compare the work and results, the Non-specialized schools are good as well, but they run a trophy for everyone program. Everyone got great grades, in the specialized program everyone earned good grades. I could go on, but it’s pretty obvious where it goes from here...
So why not ask a few of the 4% or 6% how they were able to get accepted into these schools? Whatever they're doing, why not emulate it?
I know the answer, but it doesn't fit the liberal narrative.
By definition, half of the students in any group are below average.
Educate the gifted.
