Nowadays people dont wear any ties when flying, let alone a clip-on. Yup.I grew up "middle class" in the 50's and 60's and,as a result,I flew about a half dozen times while in my early-mid teens.Back then flying was a big deal and one dressed up as if he/she was going to church.

Back then they didn’t make you take off your jacket, tie, belt, shoes watch and wallet.
There are good reasons to wear as little as possible when flying today

Considering the amount of praying most likely going on during the flight that makes sense.
